Halftrack based upon Toyota's legendary FJ40.

Indeed...

Apparently Land Rover had a shot at the Half Track segment as well...I wonder which one was better...

According to a book I have (Scout Cars & Half-Tracks by J.M. Boniface and J.G.Jeudy), the Toyota half-track is Iranian. The Land-Rover one was built by Lair and called Centaur. It is fitted with Scorpion V8 engine and suspension parts. It was tested, but not adopted by the British Army.

Both well-known efforts for a light halftrack by Iran and the UK, but there was no series production. Seven prototypes of the Centaur were built, all V8-powered, mixing LHD and RHD models and with some detail differences. One was even tested by 17th/21st Lancers during maneuvers in Norway but no orders came from the British Army or other. Iran even prototyped an amphibian based on the J40 with a very peculiar aesthetic.

Iran also made this prototype:
http://www.military-today.com/apc/iranian_halftrack.htm

If may memory doesn't fail me completely they also had a prototype of a halftrack which looked as if there was an M3 suspension under it. Or I am thinking about the Alacran:
http://www.military-today.com/apc/alacran.htm
This page contains this text so maybe my memory wasn't completely out of sync with reality:
" Unknown Iranian halftrack; in 1996, a new type of halftrack has been photographed on trials in Iran. It is uncannily similar to the Alacran, but surprisingly is amphibious. It has different wheels, tracks, firing ports, and a pump jet outlet similar to that on the BTR-60, but its hull architecture is too similar to the BMS-1 Alacran to be a coincidence."

Other stuff

8-wheels:

That turret looks like quite a load for the chassis,
but I'm not an automotive engineer so what do I know....

"da lowrider"

Simply too cool for the neighbourhood

Skyguard air-defence control station (for guns and missiles)
The, ahem, digi-cam on this must have been made by someone who has inhaled or drunk too much of something illegal

Truck with a personality:

There is a long list of various Iranian equipment here:

Lots of links to images to click on

Not a contemporary vehicle, but it seems they tried it with the CMP as well:

While the Iranian tracks look like they were patterned off the M3 series, the actual suspension is totally different in all aspects.

I simply love this one: remove the tires, throw on the winter kit and bang...you have a half-skid-half-tracked UAZ-401!

Are you actually suggesting that this is a small, cheap, half-tracked amphibious vehicle?! Sir, you just found my dream car... I would give a testicle (or even two...) for it...

The single front wheel would probably get stuck in soft terrain. The usefulness of the rear tracks would therefore probably be near zero (when the ground is so soft that tracks are necessary the front wheel would spoil everything).
It would make more sense to replace the front wheel with a ski and make a "luxury" snow-mobile instead. Maybe it would be possible to make a powered front track unit and replace the wheel

Am wary whether the last one would have gained additional traction though.

Well, I would say it's quiet capable for something that started out as a joke...

panzerserra did a Bedford QL Halftrack Prototype, but neither were proceded with.

The Laird Centaur suffered 'Track-slap' on the underneath of the truck body, high running and maitnenence costs.

I've seen pics of one discovered as 'war-booty' after GW1, but anyone remember details>

There was also an attempt in Poland in the early fifties to build a "maultier"-type artillery tractor. If I have understood it correctly they used or copied the track unit from German 3-ton maultiers and used truck components made by Star.

There is a 1/24 card model:

maybe use as templates for a scratch build ... I guess that the cabin would be the most difficult part (track unit exists already...)
