to an earlier version, '72-4, would mean leaving off the laser and MRS, I'm assuming? it'll be takom's. is there anything else on the exterior? thx

Different engine and transmission decks, gun clamp, barrel and fume extractor, thermal sleeve, commanders cupola and episcopes just for a start.

Although designed for the Tamiya Chieftain I find this helpful when working out what earlier Mk's should have:

thx
why can nothing be simple, and not depend on $$$
anyone happen to know just what era takom's Mk5 is meant to be? I have osprey's and kagero's Chieftain books and both seem to suggest there wasn't much of a diff between early and later version, and most being internal

There is a Takom Mk 2 kit which would probably be a better starting point if you want a Mk.2 (different hull bins, turret stowage etc.). The issue you face is that in peacetime, tanks last a lot longer so they are continually rebuilt and upgraded. Some features survive the process (if there is no reason to change them) but many are replaced to bring it up to current standard. It might cost modellers more but it saves the taxpayers a fortune👏
Depending on what you want to build, Tamiya's kit (which is a 3) may even be a good starting point.

what I had in mind was an early Mk5, on which other Mks were based, but w/out the MRS or laser rangefinder, altho I understand some had both that and a ranging gun. thx for input, ya'll
as for tam, I've seen builds of it and it just doesn't rise to takoms standards. guess I got spoiled over time. ben a LONG time since I last built up a tamiya. I find the detail much better, even tho it still has the same ease of assembly

Well some later marks were based on the 5 but others were originally built as 2s or 3s. The 5 was the final production model but probably not the most common.
When the TLS was fitted, the RG was removed. I'm not sure that there was much external evidence for the TLS beyond the plated-over RG aperture, although IFCS also involved the MRS (so L11A3 barrel) and associated light projector next to the gunner's sight.
That list which was posted might help, whichever direction you are going.

got it and it's almost complete, save for tracks, masterclub, decals and stowed gear. solely based on the Griffen and Dunstan books, and various pix/vids and what was posted here, I think it's doable, a pre-clansman Chieftain Mk5. AFV club's Shot kal has the larkspur antenna mounts and takom's kit has a non-MRS muzzle. also, the turret roof doesn't have the locator for part D32 fitted next to the gunners sight housing. the locator for the tuning unit box will have to be carefully removed. also included is the RG. fortunately, I found a suitable part to fit the larkspur mount to.
just noticed re: previous replies lol. I'm referring to takom's Mk5, not tamiya's
