I'm planning on building up a Ukrainian D-30 being towed. I'd much rather use a $7 Trumpy Type 96 kit over a $25 Trumpy D-30 kit. Are there any major differences between the Russian and Chinese built guns?

It looks like the exact same 4 sprues of plastic in both boxes to me. They only seem to have different decals.

I don't know about the guns but the three kits are different:
2328 uses muzzle brake sprues D1 and D4 and has typical Russian cross-country tires.
2329 uses muzzle brake sprue D3 and has typical Russian cross-country tires.
2330 uses muzzle brake sprue D1 and has smooth tread tires.

That does help. How about the 1/1 scale ones?

I don't know where it came from but here's a short walkaround of the D-30: https://archive.kitmaker.net/features/7418

What did you find when you looked at photos of the Russian weapon you want to model and compared them against Trumpeter's Type 96 kit?

Photos I've found are generally from a distance and questionable as to if they are Russian or Chinese manufacture. What I am trying to find out is there any obvious changes made by the Chinese, like with their 130mm gun copy which has the breech vertical as opposed to the Russian ones with a horizontal breech. In other words will the kit of the Type 96 pass as a Russian built Ukrainian D-30. Difference in tires may be moot. I found on pic , which if captioned correctly, is a Russian D-30 supplied to the East Ukraine rebels and captured by Ukrainian National forces. t has the "street tread" tires on it.

Why don't you ask NORINCO? They made it.

I do not have kit 02330, but comparing online parts scans to my D-30 kits, I say buy it and go for it. IF I have not missed anything and the tires are the only real difference, no big deal. The tires are completely interchangable on the real thing and, at a quick glance, I already found one Identified as either Bulgarian or Serbian with the "smooth" tires.
So I think you are safe buying it and using it for Ukraine.

Frenchy, I think there is only 1 wheel rim. If you are referring to the Serbian picture, it is just missing the center hub (not equipped but could/should be). If you are referring to the rim hole sizes, I think it is a illusion on the Serbian gun that the holes seem smaller.

Thanks, All, (or should I say Spasiba / Xiexie ?) for the help. I opted for the Type 96 kit. Will have it being towed by a Kraz 6322. I'll try and post some pics when I finish it up.
