A freight train carrying Army vehicles derailed late this morning on the south edge of downtown Kansas City. Fire department officials at the scene say eight cars of the eastbound 75-car train left the tracks (near Southwest Boulevard and Genessee), just east of Interstate 35. Two military tanks are on their side, but no injuries are reported. Union Pacific says the special military train hauling tanks and trucks was bound from Yermo, in far southern California, to Memphis, Tennessee.

As usual the press needs to get their facts straight - An M1 does not carry a 1000 gallon of fuel!!! There is roughly a 1000 gallons between the 2 vehicles.

I'm not positive about shipping on trains, but when they ship them by truck, all military vehicles haft to be mty to transport, after hurricane Andrew, they had just filled up their tanker, then they got word they had to ship back to Bragg, so the commander asked me how much fuel I had in my truck, so I told him just enough to get me back to Georgia to where the fuel was cheaper, then he said good, that he was going to fill me up with fuel, so I asked him why the free fuel, then he said he just filled it, and they are not allowed to ship full of fuel, the Government classifies, over 400 or 500 gallons to be placard. Now my tractor, I can hold 300 gallons, and I wanted to add more fuel tanks to carry enough fuel to get me into and back out without hafting to buy the real exspensive fuel in the western states like California when it was over $2.00 a gallon, but I could only add another small tank without hafting to placard my tractor. Another thing is they useually try to keep them low on fuel when shipping to keep it from getting stolen.
