I have long been interested in "Vietnam's Vietnam", and now that NVA figures are available, I wondered which vehicles actually get sent into Cambodia during the 1980's phase of the war, when the guerrillas fought back heavily. I assume more than the T-54's and the M113's.

As far as I know the Vietnamese threw pretty much all they had into this war, both against the Cambodians and then the Chinese when they invaded. I believe they had plenty of BTR's (40/50/60- not sure about 152s) and apparently some BMP's. These could have been the Chinese version of the BMP as they also had some Type-59's and Type-63s (in addition to the Russian made PT-76). As you point out they also had the T-54/55- in addition they had some T-34's as well and some rocket artillery though I'm not sure which varieties they had at this point- could have been early post-war or even WW2 vintage Soviet types.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

I ask because I have a started BMP-1 which I wondered if Vietnam sent into Cambodia. It would be no small irony if it were crewed by the APVN and black-clad guerillas were about to blow IT up!

Indeed that would be a very interesting scenario.

I first saw the phrase "Vietnam's Vietnam" in a 1980's issue of "U. S. News And World Report". Afghanistan was already called the "Soviet Vietnam" long ago.

Yeah I've heard it called that a couple of times. I think it was quite similar to Afghanistan in terms of how things unfolded- they went in with limited aims, achieved them and then were left trying to re-build a society that began to resent their presence.
