Hi all,

Im just looking for opinions and information.. i'd like to build a 1:35 Jagdtiger and wanted to know peoples thoughts on kits. I would like to build the Henschel variant, no zimmerit, also im looking for the normal L55.

Can anyone recommend suitable kits? Im thinking possibly the Tamiya 'mid' variant Otto Carius kit.

I will likely also upgrade with an aftermarket barrel, P/E set for engine covers and tool clasps etc. as well as aftermarket tracks, so any comments recommendation for those would be great. I have only used voyager aftermarket sets to date, I think they are good but as they have all I have used I guess I cant say if others are better or worse!

I find it interesting that the Tamiya kit is nominated as a 'mid' version. I think there were only 80 odd Jagdtigers produced in total so how varied are the 80 tanks? I know there were 10 or so Porsche variants, and the rest were Henschel. But what other variations are there? Some earlier tanks had zimmerit, but is there any other differences in the 80 or so tanks produced?

I was also thinking of a 3-tone hard edge camo pattern, but im not sure if any examples exist of this?

Thanks in advance for any tips or information!!

Good choice - the Tamiya kit is excellent all round. The link and length supplied tracks are also very nice too, but these can be replaced with Friuls, Master Club or Model Kasten tracks if you want to. The Model Kasten tracks are fiddly, but come with mounts for the side skirts, which is a handy addition as the kit molded mounts are a little bit soft.

Aber makes the best etch set for the Tamiya Jagdtiger, with screens and turned parts included. Also make a set for fenders and side skirts which is excellent. RB Barrels do a great barrel which is cheap and fits well.

As for 'versions' - well theres an early, middle and late with everything. Now, I'm simplifying things here, but an 'early' version could be categorised as having the jack mounted low on the rear plate, and a jack block fitted too. It will have 4 sets of spare tracks mounted on each super structure side, and non ribbed front fenders. A 'mid' will have 6 sets of spare tracks on each superstructure side, track cable moved to the right hand side circular engine deck vent, no pilsen mounts on the roof, a hold open catch on the engine hatch, and a relocated AA MG mount on the engine deck. A 'late' will have 6 spare track sets, relocated track cable, pilsen mounts on roof and upper superstructure sides, a tow point mounted between the armoured exhaust guards (like on the Kubinka Jagdtiger), ribbed front fenders, two handles on each hatch for driver and operator, engine hatch hold open catch, relocated AA MG mount.

Sorry I know this is a lot to go through, and I've simplified it down a bit, but that should give you the broad brush info. Below is my Tamiya JT, X7 of sPz.Jg.Abt 512 (its what I described above as a 'mid'.

Nice build Sam how do you find the masterclub tracks compared to fruils.

Cheers Ben

Hi Ben,

to be honest I haven't used them personally, I have a set that I was going to use on my Meng King Tiger, but haven't got around to using them. A certain 1/16 scale kit has been dominating my time as of late

Cheers Sam, I can imagine that build taking up a lot of time.

Out of interest have you got this Jagdtiger in camo yet as it looks like a great subject you have going there.

Cheers Ben.

Yep have just started to apply paint to the interior:

Have a couple of Dragon Jagdtigers and the Tamiya kit. I see little if any improvement with the Tamiya compared to the Dragon kits. To me they are similar.

I know of no photos of Carrius's Jagedtiger, and I also know he didn't use one very long. Maybe two or three weeks?
Perhaps David Byrden has a photo?

Thanks for the feedback Sam. Sam is the Tamiya kit you show in the photos the mid/otto/35307? it looks great, have you a paint scheme in mind? Funny though I just noticed the 35307 kit doesn't include fenders? Did 'mid' jagdtigers leave factory with no fenders?

Your 1/16th build is insane! There are some builds I see which I think would be a shame to put paint on, as the paint hides some of the story of the build, and how much work goes into them, yours is definitely one! fantastic.

I have seen some renderings of Jadtigers in dunkelgelb only, no other paint - is that correct? does anyone know if any of the X marked vehicles were plain dunkelgelb?

Tamiya does include the side skirts in the kit. No idea why the instructions don't show them.

Not sure if any of the production JT's left the factory without skirts, but I think they shed them pretty quickly, either by the crew removing them, or hitting something and damaging them and removing them that way. Lots of shots of later JT's show a line of red primer visible low on the hull sides, indicating there were skirts applied before the camo was painted, as this primer section (that would have been hidden by the skirts) would have been protected from camo paint by the skirts themselves.

I've seen some of the Jagdtigers with Porsche suspension in Dark Yellow, but the production vehicles all were camouflaged. Shotsof X7 (and most the X and Y vehicles of s.Pz.Jg.Abt512) show them very dusty, but they sported a solid 3 colour camouflage scheme.

I did this JT up as X7, before it was knocked out:

Hope this helps,

Sam
