Looking to build a non ACAV option, any gotchas to look out for? I know enough of the M113 to know it's complicated.

I plan to replace the track with AFV club.

I was thinking about ROK version but some photos suggest a bright green and OD camo, not yellow and OD? I am not 100% sure I am looking at the same vehicle that Academy wanted to represent.

Would these interiors be white or sea foam green?

What Tamiya or Vallejo colors would be good for Australian, ROK or US flame?

Sorry I can't answer all your questions, the interior should be foam green and as for the tracks the AFV Club ones are mediocre.

I'd go for the best if I were you : the Modelkasten workable M113 tracks, they can be found for about $20 if you look carefully, they are the only ones IMVHO that capture the delicate detail and shapes even the Friul metal ones look clumsy in comparison.

Thanks. I found I already had a set of them.

I did find this article for the T50 turret and Australian LRV
http://www.mheaust.com.au/Aust/Research/M113T50/M113T50.htm

I found need to sand the second front shock, from WayneB's build

I need to add hull armor, from Mick's build,

and add a filter box.

His build is later so I am not sure what all applies a Vietnam build.

What type of grills do I need with a twin .30 cal build, did the traverse bar exist in the 60's and is it the notched left fender I need?
https://www.scalemates.com/products/img/1/7/1/186171-42-instructions.pdf

From what I found the Aussie OD green is different then US OD green, but I don't understand how different (using Tamiya or Vallejo colors) and if the LRV's where repainted when the T-50 was added?

Thanks for the reply. What is wrong with the Academy T50? I had seen their paint but trying not to extend the paint supply chain and hoping for something close with the other two brands.

Thanks HP. How off we talking? I have tried to find the red line photos or something similar showing the issue but my googlefu has not found any visual help.

Here you can find the instructions :

https://www.model-making.eu/products/item_name-104717.html

The turret side view is off as well (and even worse than the kit turret !), but is shows that the turret is too tall...

Just found a close-up :

and here's the 1:1 one :

Found some conflicting photos, I think these are basically the same area and timeframe but the right rear bumper vehicle number and red roo are not always there. Any ideas why?

Notice the different storage and fender damage on the three tracks? Bag on one, cans on another, a damaged rear fender. Either they are three different vehicles or one over a period of time. Things on armored vehicles change daily even hourly...

I'd say they are at least two different vehicles. One has the damaged fender and red 'roo. The other has no 'roo and a number on the fender( barely visible on right rear fender in first picture) And carrying either a bag on the back, another with jerry cans and the other has the smoke grenades on the back.

I had viewed the damaged fender as an early or late time period and/or replacement parts.

Two vehicles makes sense as per that website looking around there seems to be two vehicles, "& Tears" and "& Tears II" both had 31A. One had a red square the other a blue triangle.

In Michael K.Cecil's "Australian military equipment profiles vol. 4 "The M113 & M113A1 armoured personnel carriers in Australian service 1962 to 1972", you can find a list of M113A1 APC's of the Cavalry Squadron in South Vietnam. Listed there are at least 3 different T50-fitted M113A1's with "31A" callsign :

ARN 134296 (B Sqd 3 Cav Reg) in October 1969
ARN 134243 ( idem ) in June 1970
ARN 134312 (A Sqd 3 Cav Reg) in August 1971

Two other "31A" APC's fitted with a single .50 Cal. MG are listed as well...

Interesting, so maybe what they really meant for the 4288 decal, was 4296. That seems easy enough to mix up on a poor or long distance photo.

On a side note, ARN 134288 (callsign "84") belonged to B Sqd 3 Cav Reg. Its T50 turret was armed with a .50 + .30 MGs combo.

I have a set of firestorm dry transfers with the roos and shield. I probably won't use them so send me a pm. Wayne

However that may be, the white "4288" marking is way too big

Here's a picture of "Blood" (Callsign 31) :

and here's "Sweat" :

Kinda like the trio of names.

For paint, I am thinking XF-74 JGSDF Olive Drab as the base coat for the US Army vehicle color then a weathered XF-62 Olive Drab + XF-15 Flesh on top for the Aussie color.

Question, what is the white bar? I don't think the Aussies had that but hard to tell from photos.

I don't see it here

But I do here

I believe that is the locking bar for when the hood with the grills is raised. I think it secured to the u shaped bracket you can see in the first pic between the grills. The T50 turret would probably have not allowed space for it. Wayne

They had another nicely named trio - 'The Good' (86), 'The Bad' (86A) and 'The Ugly' (86B).

Talking about the hull mods for the T50 turret fitting, the drivers hatch hinges had to be relocated to a position 23° to the left of the hatch longitudinal centreline. As a consequence, the hatch overhung the side of the APC by about 38mm when in the locked open position.

I found this photo very interesting. There's another well known photo with three M106's laid in the triangle. Looked like a similar A.O., but also may have been deep in the rubber plantations. The photo posted was not in the plantations.
