I have once again picked up this hobby having left it in high school. I now have the money and patience to do it justice. I was wondering how people paint/simiulate cloth seats or leather seats. I am building the tamiya Horch 4x4 my first model to experiment with. It has a folded canvas (cloth) top which I would like to make look as realistic as possible any suggestions?

Welcome Back to the Hobby Padrino. You came to the best site in the business.
You posted a good question over there. I'm wondering about the same thing.
Have a good time over here !

Welcome Padrino. Most people use oil colors for stimulating leather; oils have a slight sheen that reproduce the best looking leather I have seen so far. I haven't tried oils so far and use Humbrol enamels instead (I thinks it is Brown Bess). I wash the brown couple of times, each time with a slight darker shade of brown, and finally with straight black. Washing the browns over and over again will give sheen to the color and make it look worn... If you want more sheen add a drop of semi-gloss clear cote to the mix.

What's often used for fabric is replacing the plastic part by paper tissue soaked in a mix of
water and white glue. Afterwards, when you paint it, you must be carefull not to soak it
too much or it'll loose it's shape.

Padrino
penpen's got it - to simulate soft skin the 'tissue paper' method is used a lot. Experiment with different papers and 'grains' to get the scale and texture the way you want it.

Welcome back to the hobby & ArmoramA !
What ever color you intend to use you can also
make a nice illusion of cloth & leather, by using
again, the right color, a wash, and the key -
" a good drybrush technique with oil's ".
Drybrushing gives excellent results for simulating
cloth texture & leather to any fabric of uniform, seats. etc
associated with a model.
You have some good advice & a variety of mehtods in this thread
to go by.
GOOD LUCK !

Padrino,
to illustrate penpen's suggestion, look into the "scratchbuilding" forum on this site. There's several posts about making tarp, rolled tents, etc... Certainly worthwile. It would look great on a Horsch !

Hi Danny - i wish I could post some pic's of some of the techniques I use,
but unfortunately I have no digital camera or not even a scanner - sorry !
It really suck's, especially when you want to enter an article or model for
a "model forum contest ". Beside I really need a new PC system with up to
date technonogy - MY PC IS ANCIENT & LACKS A GOOD PROCESSOR & MEMORY !
So that's my situation at present.

Howdy Padrino! Welcome to the best modelbuilding site on the web!
Here's a link to a discussion on Making Tarps: How to Make Tarps Hope this helps you some! :-)
Ralph, check this out: FujiFilm Finepix 2800 This is a very nice camera that I purchased recently. You can see a few pictures from it in the 'NASA Spacecraft Reccomendations" thread.

Hey Yoda - Thanks my friend, that really is a super camera.
Unfortuantely, like I said my PC is ancient and I only have a 75MHz Pentium Processor
and 40MB of RAM ( boy am I embarrassed ! ).
If you know of a digital ( not many, I know ) that will hook up to these limited
spec's - I'M ALL EARS ( LOL !!!!!!!!!! ).
