Hi rock and welcome to Armorama! Future is applied by brush or airbrush. Most like myself use an airbrush without thinning it and apply in very fine coats. As far as washing, go to the top of this forum and check out the "FAQ and Answers" sticky and I think alot of your questions will be answered. If not please feel free to come back and fire away at us!

I do.. Gives a nice result as far as ease of capillary action...the wash flows much nicer. There are some who do a wash without future. Its a matter of preference. Glad we can help ya!

Future is easiliy applied and dries pretty flat whether applied with a brush or AB. Of course care and paitence always apply.
The future gives the wash a smooth flat surface to flow over. The Flat in color is achieved by a grainy surface. Light is disbursed and diffused by all the little grains the surface. When you apply a wash over it it must find its way over the bumpy surface and of course this is difficult with a thin wash. The future is applied over flat paint to give it a nice smooth shiney surface (shiney is achieved by a uniform ungrainy surface. Light is relected directly back to its source off a flat surface - hence the shine). The wash easily flows over the smooth surface.
So - do you allway apply future - I do about 97% of the time. If I have a small area that I'm willing to add a few coats of wash to I'll skip it. Or if the wash is a crease type wash.

Also - future is Great for decals. decals love a smooth surface to be applied to. Silvering of decals happens usually because of the flat bumpy surface. Future solves most of this.

So Future is a good habit to get into.
