Hi all,

Because I don't have enough going on at present with my 1/16 scale Jagdtiger build, I thought id start Meng's excellent King Tiger, and throw in their interior and working tracks set. Made a little progress today, just the first couple of steps in the instructions.

The join between the hull interior sides and sponson floors has been filled with Tamiya grey putty, it looks a little messy but will clean up nicely.

Its been pointed out on other forums and on Facebook that theres a fit issue with the armour that surrounds the final drives on the Meng kit - i thought i'd post these two images as proof that there is no issue (at least on my kit). Ive built a number of these kits and I've experienced no issue thus far, perhaps its operator error.

Jumping between the interior kit and the tank kit itself, I started working on the torsion bars and suspension. The interior set gives you the same torsion bars that come in the separate working track set, these glue to the swing arms that come in the tank kit. No weird camber issues here, which is great.

Adding details to the drivers and operators positions. The Meng interior set is outstanding.

That is a very fine and clean looking build, Sam. I am looking forward to following along. I walked by a BUNCH of these kits at AMPS and was content to leave them be, now you have me rethinking.. ya bastid!

I'm torn, between Trump's 16 scale KT and this one. I will be watching intently.

Is that the small MG accessories box on the right wall? It looks a little strange. Have you photos of a real one?

What are the dimensions of the MG34 ammunition bag lids? Lots of manufacturers make them oversize.

G'day Sam

Looking good. I'm currently at about the same stage of building the Takom KT with interior, and found the best reference by far is the series of articles on the Superking published on AFV Modeller. The articles can be downloaded as pdfs for one pound each.

Having said that, it would appear so far that both Takom and Meng have read the same articles, as the accuracy and ease of fit to date is stunning.

One small point (illustrated in the articles mentioned above) is that the floor hatch has been provided with the locking arms retracted, which would mean the hatch would simply fall out of the hole in the floor. It would appear that Takom and Meng have made the same mistake - I spent some time yesterday correcting mine.

I would be interested to know what colour or mix you used for the primer red.

Keep posting please.

Thanks

Regards

Rob

G'day David

I have seen exactly that information recently - now I will have to rack my brain and try to remember where.

Found it - over on Missing Lynx.

Lid is 105 wide and 110 deep. Bag is about 109 wide. Total height is about 255 of which the bag is 215.

Hi Rob,

Ive just spent 6 months detailing Trumpeters Jagdtiger fully, so im intimately aware of the workings of the Tiger II/Jagdtiger, from a modelling perspective. Ive got Dave's Superking book, which is a terrific reference. Im building this interior out of box, as I did the Takom one earlier, to highlight whats good (or not) about the kits.

As for colour - thats the colour of the plastic so far, I've not applied any paint as yet. I'll be using MMP paints when I do paint it.

These kits (I am including all Meng and Takom KT's) really need an interior etch set. *hint hint

G'day Matt

Having spent most of the afternoon trying to build the bits missing off the radio racks out of Evergreen I can only agree!!

Sorry, I was asking for the dimensions of Meng's ammunition bags, not the real ones!

If I didn't have a 1/16 KT I'd get this kit but I've come to realize you CAN have too many tigers.

Oh well, at least now you know (although I'd be VERY surprised if you didn't know already), and for the record, I just checked the size of the Takom ones and they're too small.

Short of raiding numerous kits, does anybody know where I can get 24 decent ammunition bags?

Hi David,

The Meng parts are 3.2mm x 3.2mm across the lid area, and the canvas section hangs 8mm from the top of the lid to the bottom of the bag.

Hope this helps,

That looks like a very convincing interior!

The low flat box behind the turret; that's the MG bipod box, isn't it? Have we photos of it there? Is there a decal for it?

Gday Sam

Looking great! I can't speak for the engine compartment (yet) but Meng's radio and instrument panel looks better than Takom's. I've just spent a considerable amount of time adding missing bits to the Takom radio and frame in particular.

Yeah I now all about that - heres my radio rack for the Trumpeter 1/16 scale Jagdtiger. Its similar but also different to the one in the King Tiger. Heaven forbid the Germans do anything to make it easier for us!

Obviously its easier to include more in the 1/16 scale build, but theres still stuff to add in 1/35 scale.
