Hello all my first blog on armorama for a long while will be hobbybosses rebox of the lovely Tristan flak 38. I really rated Tristar kits back in the day when they were still going and was elated to hear that hobbyboss had acquired the moulds. (What actually happened to tristar )

Anyhow. A box.

And a start
The transmission went together quite well and is nicely detailed with a fully modelled Pita driving station with lots of etch

The part that covers the photo etch rings was overcame so I used some foil from a pill packet and some putty to act as a surfacer.

.

More soon.

I had a big gap and got back into modelling 2 years ago. But only just got back into armor. I have been building wingy things which has forced me to improve on construction and finish so win win. Here's a few for those of you who are interested

Carlos and Colin thankyou.
I ended up making a tiger 2 diorama as my first re entry to armor. You can see that over on the dioramas section of the forum.
Anyhow a small update. I am plugging away at the sub assemblies for the interior and have managed to lay down some colour. The red oxide is Vallejo cavalry Brown and the transmission and engine are various shades of lifecolour olive greens. Iirc they were dark olive var, hellgrun. Shwarzgrun olivgrun and light khaki for a little modulation.

And the ever dreaded ejector pin mark strikes again

Fit is good so far and the colours have been sealed with Alclad aquagloss.

Got some more work done. Primer red is Vallejo cavalry Brown and the elfbien is white and dark yellow mixed up. There was a fit issue with the radiator and fan but taking the fan off fixed that and you don't see it anyway. Here's the pics..

The black bit here was 're riveted with stretched sprue as the fit went a bit bad.

These boxes were a little wonky but they are ok

Hi James,

Nice work, good colour choice.
The Flak 38T builds up to a nice build.

What paint brand did you use for the exterior?

Thanks Michael, I used tamiya colours. In order darkest to lightest. Red Brown, dark yellow, deck tan and white. (The last two I mixed in a little flat yellow to retain the yellow tinge)

Nice work James to get the right blend of colour.

I thought it may have been a main stream colour from one of the companies like AK,Mig or lifecolour.

Keep posting your images I'm not that far away with completing the Dml flak 38 and your work is inspiring me to hurry up and finish.Well at least get some paint on it.

Thanks Michael I was tempted to use an all in one set but after reading this it made sense to stick with what I have.

Got some chipping down using a sponge and tamiya red Brown and black mix also painted the handles on the wooden tools in oil

Interesting article James,

I cans see your style now.

The tools and chipping look great.
The beauty with these articles that are provided by various modeller's is that taking a piece of what you learn and break it down into your own style and in the end happy with your own creation of art.
One area which I have found over the years is that the use of filters and washes over your vehicle can dramatically change the overall outcome.
Going from Life colour acrylics , using a earth wash to make the vehicle suttle in tone difference which is what to aim for.
Ie: for me trying to create a realism look in 35th scale.
Finally the photographic image plays the final verdict in light and dark appearance.ie: digital enhancements to bring the image to life.

End version once wash, pin washes and chipping done. The style below is similar to when the DML Flak 38 will be done.

Michael

Thankyou Michael, that's a nice looking jagdtiger.

A little progress. I did some oil dot filters to accentuate and subdue some of the shading. Then ran a wash of burnt sienna/vandyke Brown/ultramarine over the whole thing. So far I have built up one side of the tracks. The colour mix for these is red brown/grey tamiya colours. The flakpanzer will be in a small diorama and I have the figure built and primed also.

When the tracks are done detail painting the fighting compartment properly, building and painting the flak gun, and painting the figure will be addressed

So I built up the elevation for my diorama with foam. And made a start on my figure. Sorry about the bad lighting.

The dark hole will be an outlet.

This is the last figure I painted and I was really pleased with it.

This is the face of the current figure I am working on for the diorama. I think the shading is better but natural light tomorrow morning will reveal all. Bad lighting at night with a photo taken on my phone isn't ideal. Any pointers ?

More soon. J

Nice work James on the Flak and the figures.

Love the camo on the tank, you have done a good job with the colour shades.

Your model is looking really good!!!

By the way it looks like you're going with the number 13 flakpanzer. I see you have not built the flak gun so just to let you know, the shield was not mounted on this particular vehicle.

I was going to use 13 too, but I made the mistake of mounting the shields on my flakpanzer 38(t) and have had to use alternate markings.

Thanks Matt, unfortunately 13 was based in the Normandy area and this dio is going to be based on the Soviet advance so historical accuracy down to the location is going to be completely off, so I'm not sure if I will use the shields. The diorama is supposed to be after a last ditch defence by the flakpanzer so in that respect I might have the shields attatched.

Chris, thankyou I'm glad it has inspired you , looking forward to the build !

A little progress... after looking at the face in natural light I was very disappointed. So some re working of the whole face and I'm happy. There is a little burr on the right eye but for me. It's ok.

I need a little help with the brass badge and the greatcoat and hat the figure is wearing. What colours should they be . Thanks in advance . James

An update ! Whilst not for my vehicle progress has been made on my diorama base again. First of I used this..

Fantastic mould from dioramadebris.co.uk
And made a few batches of bricks in various shades.i used stone cast powder. And built this..

This wall will be housing an outlet from a stream or a run off, with some of it being partly submerged.

Got some plaster down for the front section. The road is going to be cast from a mould made from plastercine.
