what was the standard towing vehicle/primemover for the US 3' towed AT gun?

i guessed it would be something like a deuce and a half truck, but would i be able to use a big shot?

i fancy the look of the AFV club kit, and would like to use it for towing my trakz AT gun,

would this be possible?

cheers

I saw one source that said the M2 halftrack was standard, but other vehicles could also be used. My general view on questions like this is, unless you have a reference that definatively answers the question, if it's plausible, it's possible.

the Dodge WC62/63 'big shot' as it was called was primarily a personnel carrier and not a tower of artilery.

having said that though here is a pic of a 1/2 ton VC series Dodge taken at Beltering towing an artilery piece so anything is possible

The standard PM for the M5 3" Gun was the M2/M3 Half-track, along with any of it's other variants could be used.

The WC-62/63 had a towed load capacity of 3500lbs. and was used to tow the M1 57mm AT gun. Keep in mind that the 57mm weighed in at just over 2800lbs, while the M5 3" weighed nearly 5000lbs. The M5 3" gun required a 2.5 tonner to pull her.

As an aside, I'm sure that the WC 62/63 could have been used, but not for long.

Cliff, that looks to be the 6pdr. AT, which is the same as the U.S. 57mm AT minus the muzzle brake.

My uncle served with a towed 3" AT gun unit in France. He said they had halftracks for PM's.

ken,

you are correct the gun is a 6-pdr. mk 2 from the look of it. the US 57mm is a license built version.

thanks for the info guys

cheers
