i wouldnt go with food colouring but yes it is possible.
get your plaster, obviously the kind you mix with water, substitute some of the water with acrylic paint of your choice, mix and use as you wish.
its very easy, and if you chip of crack your finished model, it wont show white through!
cheers

Ah yes! Acrylic paints! Why didn't I think of that?
How 'bout poster colors or watercolor? They're waterbase right?

Anyone ever tried mixing dry tempera paint with the dry plaster before adding the water? I wonder how that would work...

I got some dry tile grout in green and some in brown. A little goes a long way, so practice. Now when I drill holes or make cutouts, at least I have a solid base color to work with. Go to a tile store for it as I couldn't find it in the monsters like Lowes and Home Depot. It works on Durhams as well and I really like Durhams.

As long as the coloring agent is water based it'll do fine with plaster.

Hi Shonnen,
I imagine any water soluable paint would mix with the plaster.
Acylics sound the best bet....On the house front I have mixed a little vinyl emulsion with Poly-filler occasionally and it worked...,but not for models.
Self coloured stone or concrete as a base for you to shade afterwards?
Just a guess.
Cheers
Peter
