I've tried many techniques to paint wooden rifles like the K98 etc. but never got it the way I wanted it. Getting the grain into the wood was the hardest....untill...
A couple of weeks ago I bought a "Furniture Repair Set" containing 4 pens in different brown colors to repair scratches on your wooden furniture and it works great on rifles.
First I gave the rifle a grey primer. I took the repair pen and started coloring the rifle. It makes the grain itself !!! In 4 minutes the rifle was colored in different shades of brown with darker grainstripes. Left it to dry and painted the metal parts.
Because the stuff is quit shiny I added some matt finish and done. I'll see if I can post a picture but believe me, it's worth trying.

I used the light color and I will have to add some more matt varnish on this one but the grain comes automaticly. Just color the rifle with the pen. I bought my set for 5 euro's at the Action shop but I think any brand will do the same.

They are all over e-bay, ranging from around £1.50 for 3 colours to a 12 piece pen and crayon kit for £4.99. definately going to look into this.

It's almost like the paint wasn't fully mixed inside the pen and separated a bit - which worked out awesome.

Don't ask me what the secret is, it just works like that.
I use a pen with a slant tip (not a pointed one) and I think the grain is the result of the fact that there is more 'paint' on the tip (see picture). Just take some rifles out of your spare box and try it out (with and without grey primer ). The rifle in the picture is 1/16 scale but it worked also on Andrea 1/32 scale (primed).
For the 'hard to reach' parts I took a small brust and got some ink of the pentip. Good luck
