I'm not great on units, but the 654 had the lates on the Western Front after fighting in Russia w ELephants/Ferdinands.
Lots of folks make deck screens, Aber's are very nice and have a 'woven' 3d texture to them too..
Yes, you can do a late w/o zimmerit. There is even a picture in the JJ Fred book on the 654 of a zimm-less late with the early barrel.
Unfortuantely the book is expensive (US$80+)
