Should be two cables. Pull on one and the tank could spin around in the mud and not go anywhere and worse one cable would have too much stress and snap.

The guys would be pitching in, literally, throwing in wood, blankets and straw for the the tank to get traction. Or better yet those cleats nicely stored in the fender. Thats what they're there for. Not just snow. That along with the tow hooks, other cable and jack and the blocks on the back fender would be thrown into the mix to get the tank out. And somebody has to have a pry bar. The ubiquitous tanker tool, the tanker's bar.

As said above the broken track would at least be tied together using the "u" hooks and a rope to work them back on while pulling the tank forward.

By the way, the preferred method for self recovery is to use the "u" hooks, cable put around a log and the track. Drive forward, the log goes under the vehicle allowing it to clear the mud. That's why Russian tanks invariably have unditching logs and tow cables.

Tim and Stephen - One of the best parts of this forum is picking up good info! I'm sure both of your observations are spot on. Who knows? Maybe I'll try another "night in the ruts" some day (with better info at hand!)... As for this, the plan focused on the tank and mud and making it look reasonably convincing - just wish I knew what you guys did before I started!

As for those figs...uhh, yeah, they are not top of the shelf resin...which is ok...I didn't want to spend too much on this build - good painting practice anyway..we'll see - maybe it will be ok when it's done - who knows?

What to do now? I'm going to finish it and place it among other finished projects - it will soon become "night in the dust".. tho it is a bummer to know what I'm building is...not right....

As for next steps, I will finish the terrain, adding more mud and eventually water - at this point I'm just curious to know if I can.

Hey Nick no no the only reason I pitched in then was because I think it’s easily amendable & as I’d hoped Stephen knows what he’s talking about better than I.
Just lose the infantry & spend 20 bucks or so on one of those great MinArt tank crews who can be knee-deep around the tracks preparing for – or arguing about - the tow, with a few generic tools & a 2nd cable lying around. Besides, to have the figs up to their knees in it wld only amplify your focus, the mud itself

This is one is done - it has been now for a couple of weeks - but work has been kicking my A$&!! eating up lots of time and my patience - but, the dude abides.....

Please see below - I finished this up generally as I planned to - but, Stephen, I scratch built some tools and some cable rope - you'll see. And Tim, these are the figures I started with - I pulled one guy off the tank and he received some surgery - he went from sitting to walking - with a few big cuts and lots of putty -

At this point, I can't speak to the accuracy of the representation (per previous comments above) but like the results, but I do like the way the mud etc worked out, which was the basic goal. After this posting, this model will make it's way to dio limbo...where it will sit! with it's friends, the other finished projects! If anybody wants a dio or two cheap, let me know!

You got it. Came out great. Love that guy splashing through the mud, the one with the tow cable and the tanker's bar. Great job. Really tells the story of tankers doing a tough job under trying circumstances.
