Is there a guidebook for painting civil war figures? I thought I saw one a while back but can't find it anymore.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, exactly, but I googled painting civil war miniatures and this is what I found.

This link looks promising:

I think you're referring to the book called Painting Civil War Miniatures by Mike Davidson. Schiffer puts it out.

Yep, that would do fine but I thought I saw a newer version a few weeks ago.

Hans,
The best thing as far as I am concerned,to do is find images of Bill Horans' work. His Civil War figs are the best I have ever seen anywhere.

You can try Michigan Toy Soldier Co. I know they carry lots of American Civil War stuff. Osprey Publishing has done tons of books as well that might be useful.

The three volume Fighting Men of the Civil War set by William C. Davis is great since it not only has the usual color plates if uniforms but color photos if surviving weapons, gear and uniforms.
Historie and Collections do a great two volume set on Civil War uniforms that is like everything in one. It's easy to go crazy with ACW references. Before you know it you start making pilgrimages to battle fields and haunting reenactments. Nothing beats finding the unit you want to do at a reenactment and just taking picture after picture.
