Did any of the M1IP 105mm armed tanks have the NBC pack instead of the storage box on the left side of the hull or was the NBC pack only added to the M1A1 120mm armed tanks?
Thanks for any information,
Tom O.

Tom,
The NBC System was installed on M1A1s only. The M1IP had a tool storage bin where the NBC system is located on the M1A1.

To clarify on what John stated, the NBC System was first installed in place of the left sponson tool storage bin starting with M1A1s and has continued on all later version of M1A1s, M1A2s, and M1 ABVs, but apparently NOT M1 Panther IIs nor M1s or M1IPs.

Thanks for the conformation. I want to cross kit some Abrams kits to make an M1IP. Of course as soon as I finish it a kitmaker will release one.

Jeff,
Thanks for assist with adding clarity to what I originally wrote. Panther II counter mine vehicles were built from M1 hulls, so they would not have the NBC pack in the left sponson. I will need to look at my ABV pics but I suspect that those vehicles were built on M1A1 hulls.

Yes John, the M1 ABV's have the NBC pack on the left.

I seem to recall that the M1E1s had it there as well.
I was in D co. 3/8 Cav 86-88.
I believe that we traded in our IPs for E1's

E1 did indeed have NBC unit, but there were only 14 E1 prototypes built. The tank was standardized as A1 in 1984, before the production started, so the tanks you traded your IPs for were most likely M1A1s, which were first fielded in 1988.
