Hi all,
This is probably the most stupid post ever, but here goes. I am going to try to use the sponge technique for chipping my tank models, but I don't have any sponge or sponge like material. I know many folks have used packing materials, but though I do a lot of on-line shopping, I don't have any sponge packing material to use.
Where would you suggest I get (either free or purchase) a variety of different texture/fineness sponges? I am at a loss. Please help!

Try make-up sponges sold in the drug department. Tear them to get a rough edge
Or scrub sponges or green pads for a rougher texture

Curt,
I usually find mine in boxes that contained computer gear.
An upholstery shop might have cutoffs and remnants for free.

Agreed. Computer/electronics sponges are fine enough to do chipping but won't just leave blotches (assuming you blot them off enough).
You might also look for sponge/foam brushes used for applying stains and such. Find those in any hardware/paint department. They seem to use the same grey sponge as computers.

Home Depot or Lowes in the home paint section or the house cleaning section. I've found various textured sponges (large and small cells) of various softness in both places. The sanding sponges I've used for drywall are fairly rigid, nice cell size and cheap. Just cut off the sanding material and cut the sponge to suit your needs.

Depending on what part of Nevada you're in, you're either going to want to head west to the San Francisco Bay area or somewhere down towards Baja.
Remember to bring a large covered container to hold some seawater so they stay fresh during the drive back.

You can find the same household cleaning sponges, made of synthetic material, in Dollar Plus, etc., stores usually much cheaper than big name stores. Each sponge is usaully around 3" x 5", or larger. Tear off a small piece for applying chipping and scratching. I hold the piece of sponge on a pair of forceps or tweezers to save getting paint on my fingers. One 3" x 5" sponge will give enough pieces for dozens of models.

Take your wife/girlfriend to Sephora (The cosmetics store), they gave me a hand full of those black handled make up sponges for free. I just asked if I could have a few she gave me a bag to fill.

At your local brick-and-mortar sponge store. Getting rarer these days, but still some out there.

No offense from my side Biggles2.
Many things being sold nowadays for modellers can be done by oneself or can be obtained from other sources far cheaper. Still many modellers find them convenient. Even I find some of them convenient.
Regards,
Angel
