different muzzle brakes used depending on the time of production and since I am building a gun built before May44 (new ) I assume it would have the mid muzzle brake and not the last version, which was round like the last PzIVs had ?

Not sure they were timeline based. The late/ round version is already seen fitted to Pz IV in Normandy summer '44.
Personaly think they might be factory versions.

Jerry,
I reviewed the 1/72 scale Dragon offering of their PaK 40 and a similar question arose from that thread. In my review here on Armorama of this kit one would have noted that I mentioned that there was no indication given of which was early, mid or late. Since then I have still found it difficult to get a definitive answer. That being said, I did manage to find a couple of references that I am pretty sure are accurate. Basically, the double flange type was first used from May 1943. Front flange and rear disk type from March 1944. Finally, double disc type. Hope this bit of info helps you find an answer to your question.
Cheers,
Jan

Thanks a bunch Marc and Jan !
I will play it safe and go with the "mid" with rectangular in front, round in back.
