Spare tires carried on HMMWV are not standard equipment, but they should be. We ordered a spare wheel/tire for all of our HMMWVs when we were preparing to invade Iraq, (I was in 3ID at the time). They prooved to be invaluable. They were secured with a ratchet strap holding them onto the vehicle. Mine was on the roof of my 4-seater along with a large wooden box (to store water and MREs), a tent, a water can, air recognition panel, and a few other assorted items. It looked like a gypsy wagon.

Hello,
I know one way the spare tires are secured is by using two "ratchet straps" on the sloped rear hatch. Basically the straps are arraigned in a cross pattern on the hatch. The strap ends are secured on the underside of the hatch and then ratcheted tight with the spare tire on the outside of the sloped hatch. The straps we use are locally purchased straps, we tried using ones from M977s they were just to large. There was entirely to much excess strap and they were to thick, in turn causing the rear hatch to be in a bind sometimes. The smaller commercially purchased straps work much better. I am sure you can find great reference for commercial ratchet straps in maybe a on line auto parts retailer. The straps we have are 1 1/2 inch wide straps by 8 or 9 feet long if I remember correctly. Another not so dramatic option is attaching a spare in the bed of the HMMWV. When we orginally started carrying spares (about 5 years ago) we had bed mounted spares. When the bed mounts were used the tire was located right next to the tailgate on the driver's side. The tire mounted flat against the bed. The mount looked a lot like a civilian car spare tire mounting arraigment but, much larger. In fact I think those type mounts had National Stock Number so maybe Sabot may have a line on what I am talking about. I hope this helps answer your question, if not send me a pm and I will try to help you further.

P.S.
The bed mounted spare have fallen by the way side for the most part on our weapons carrier versions. Because they took up to much storage space in the interior. I know there are a few left in our 2 door versions though.
