I'm looking for suitable Russian figures that could be used for Prague, 1968. I've seen comments that the uniform was pretty close to WWII design, except that the AK-47 was the issued Rifle. If someone can confirm that for me, I'd appreciate it. I need some troops to ride on my ASU-57, as on the box art. And there's a real picture that the art work was based on.
Thanks.

Hi Greg -
Finally stumbled across your post. Though I'm far from being an expert, your assumption about Soviet uniforms in 1968 is correct - all the uniform redesigns from the end of WWII until the big reform in 1969 didn't affect the standard Summer Field uniform. The weapons and other equipment changed, though:

Though it's incomplete, that site seems to have a lot of useful info.
Hope this helps,
Jerry

Greg,
I can't help just yet re figures to crew an ASU, but if you want any figures just standing/hanging around then you might be able to track down some ancient Italeri - sometimes marketed as Revell - "Soviet Artillery"; as they're designed for WW2 they have the correct uniforms but are not encumbered with the slung greatcoat. If you further identify the Italeri Modern weapons set that will provide some AK 47s which to my mind, are decent enough. Hornet heads will really be needed for the figures and any equipment may have to be scratched from plastic card/rod and Milliput or similar for the slung respirator and ammo pouches but the basic figures are quite useful for that period of Soviet soldiery.
I haven't any of my stash to hand but I recall you gat nearly a half dozen figures in the set.
'Hope this if of some use.
Brian

Brian, thanks for the info, but I have plenty of Mini-art models Soviet figure sets, some of them even designed for riding on tanks that will do nicely. I can modify them easy enough to work. I just really need the AK-47s. I'll just keep on digging.

Don't know if you can find them, but the Testors/Italeri Modern Light weapons set has 3 AK-47s. Also the DML Viet Cong and NVA sets have some. Hope this helps. Just a thought, would they have all had AKs or would any still be using SKSs? Wayne
