I am coming from aircraft modeling. I am building an Abrams and a Bradley from OIF. I plan on pre shading and then painting a coat of enamel FS33446, and then post shading with acrylics form the following AK modern US vehicle set.

https://ak-interactive.com/product/u-s-modern-vehicles-colors-set/

I am going to seal it with future, apply decals, seal the decals, and then start to weather. I was thinking it might be easier if I purchased the Mig weathering set. Or are there better options?

Is it ok to stick with acrylic weathering products or would oil based be easier?

I think I still need something for the tracks, rust, filtering, and paint chipping. I've looked at a number videos on YouTube and have this guide on how to paint an M-109 on the Mig site.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Blain

Hi Blain,

In my humble opinion oil based weathering products are easier since they have a longer drying time.

You can make the weathering products yourself with oils and enamels. I suppose you have some of this products since aircraft modellers also use them.

You can take a look at missing links rarities world were they explain the different techniques and how to make them by yourself.

Other useful YouTube videos are IPMS Toronto Barbakan applying filters, applying washes and streaking effects. They are good videos and they show how to use commercial and how to make and use DIY products.

Wilder's YouTube Channel is an interesting one to have a look. He uses all kind of products and can help you see all the process of painting a tank.

You might find Michael Rinaldi AFV Painting and Weathering Workshop and Civilian/Gundam Painting and Weathering Workshop interesting also. He uses mainly oils for all his weathering and explains how he uses them and his philosophy.

I hope this helps you a little bit.

Regards,
Angel

The set seems a good starting point, you may want to make your own filters as well and perhaps add another pigment for some variety.

Thanks for the suggestions! YouTube is a great resource. I just wish there was more on modern subjects.
