As part of a potential future diorama I wish to incorporate a Russian Zis truck which has been hit and has turned on its side.

I need to know how to create the burnt out/damaged effect.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as usual.

Well it depends to what extent you want to go.....

I usually go for drybrushing or an airbrush, using Dark browns, blacks and greys (Depending on Vehicle, whats hit it, what it was carrying, etc.....)
I cant really 'tell' you how to do it, I just do it till it looks right and thats all i can really suggest to you....

The direction in which the burn marks go depends on whether it caught fire on its side or upright. I'm sure there are plenty of resources out there to give you an I dea of what you want........

My advice would be to airbrush black, or very dark brown and add pastel or weathering powders over the paint

Depends how old the damage is,Burnt metal tends to rust very quickly where all the paint is burnt off.Tires burn away leaving bare rims and piles of ash is the vehicle an open top if so the steering wheel and seats willbe bare burnt metal, and the wind sheild will have blown out or at least shattered. Good ideas above, I did some searching and it's tough to find good detailed information.

You can try to use ashes/soot to weather your AFV. Take a stick or old piece of wood and burn it. Then take a stiff brush and rub it into the black burned end of the wood. Use the soot that rubs off to weather the burnt area.

also, since so much of the Zis5 was wood, most of the cab and truck bed wold be burned away from the metal frame... especialy if the gas tank cooks!!

Iused rust all products and baking soda along with some Model Masters rust paint. Along the edges of the hood and cab area I used a large candel and let the soot collect.
