I prefer a threaded forum rather than these flat one-topic-everyone-replies things because it is difficult to determine who is replying to what. In that regard I think Track-Link is by far the best and most evolved forum right now ;-)
I find the little animated pictures that people add a distraction, as are the sigs, avatars and ranks. Also I prefer to talk to people with real names. Because of these distractions I visit once or twice a week.

hehe - At first I felt the same as you do Paul. However, talk with people on these boards for any length of time, and you will get to know them. I pretty much know everybody by name now - avatar and callsign regardless.
This is by far my favorite site on the net - I visit here daily. I also check out ML, but don't really get involved due to the "nature" of the discussions over there. I guess I find and endless stream of dry questions and even drier answers sort of boring.
Jim - the only thing I would change here is the "Latest Post by XXX" on the forums page :-)
I miss that... hehehe

Jeff

Quoted TextI visit Hyperscale, Modelling Madness, FSM, ARC and IPMS Stockholm quite often.
IPMS Stockholm is beautifully laid out but is not as instantly accessable as Armorama.
All have good points but for ease of use Armorama is tops for me.
It is the only site I've been tempted to join and join in the forums.
The only thing is when deleting pics from our galleries, it has to be done one by one.
Any chance of a multi-delete?
Cheers
Peter
Good suggestion Peter, also it would be nice if we could post ref photos in the refs album.
Done. At least to the point where users can upload images to most of the "generalized" categories.

Would be nice. But until the developers over at PhotoPost were to add this feature I wouldn't even try to attempt it. I need to leave the gallery pretty much "as-is" otherwise we won't be able to upgrade when new versions are released.
Thanks,
Jim

Just bring back the "last posted by xxx" on the forum main page
Probably not going to happen as this was using up too much real estate. I do have some ideas for the main page though that might give you something along this line.

Like some others have chimed in, don't change too much. Armorama is by far the best site out there, bar none.
I, like others here, frequent the other sites to see "what's up". Most of these sites have a posting and navigation system that is borderline archaic. They do have their purpose though... to remind us of how cool the "A" is.
I don't see too much need to "sub-group" the forums any further. Like Rob had stated, as long as the poster knows enough to select the proper grouping before adding his/her post, there's not too much of a problem.
As an aside - my soapbox - I think that what makes "A" so unique is it's users. Each has his/her own distinct personality that carries into this hobby seamlessly. The sig lines, the banners, the avatars, smilies options, all combine to remind us all that is still a "hobby"! While I do hold respect for those at, say ML for their "professionalism", I feel that somewhere along the line, this hobby: a pursuit outside one's regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation has somehow disintegrated into an "occupation".
< I just really like this guy.
PS: Jim, if you do make some changes, be sure to perform a full backup before in case the "new" items are not well received. But, I'm sure you already knew that.

Hi
TL is still my fave. I'm dying for the NNTP interface to return because news works better than any web forum I've seen. Threading, hitting the space bar to step through new messages, very fast etc.
The forums here are fine, but there can be pretty high bandwidth requirements when many pictures are in a discussion. There's no warning either! No problem when I'm at work, but rotten on dial-up. The best web forums I've used are those on Delphi. The Medrom and TNT figure groups are great for navigation. You have to log in, but the payoff is that only new messages are displayed. You can choose to see a whole discussion any time.
The sub-groupings here don't do much for me. I'd like to see more forums for Armor, like Allied, Axis, General etc. That's why Hyperscale is pretty useless. All the stuff is in one place, and if you don't visit regularly, there are pages of stuff that may not be of interest.
So why visit Armorama? The users here are great. The appeal of Armorama is that folks are friendly and helpful. And we can state our true feelings without getting banned!! ( Missing links sucks... )
There is lots of good content here, and it is easy to find stuff.

There's actually an NNTP layer available for the PostBoard forum Jim uses. Never used it, only seen it.

Hi Jim
The only reason I still check out any other sites is to see if there are more up to date reviews. Getting more reviews onto Armorama has always been my particular aim, but it's frustrating when you see other sites get sent "/review samples"... still if we keep on plugging...
The only change I'd pitch for on the Big-A is an indexed Review Catalogue. Sorting by hits is fun... but give me an alphabetical list anyday...
Jim, in my opinion, Armorama has got pretty much everything RIGHT... so don't fix what isn't broken....
All the best
Rowan

If I could change one thing, it would be that the forums be a little faster, sometimes I get a little bored when all there is are the same threads I have checked time and time again.
other than that you have done a great job Jim, absolutely nothing can be complained about.

Dave,
Are you making a joke??
Or are you asking me to build in a feature that makes people post more often?

Jim -
I second the AW motion for a built in feature that makes people post more often :-)
Only - you gotta tailor it so that the RIGHT people are the ones posting... lol

I must admit I do vist ML a bunch and do ask some questions on their.
To me they have their little group of people that if they post a half built tank or any model 15 people respond with well the best thing since sliced bread kind of a click thing if that is the word!
I do like their gallery on models easy to see the whole model and don't have to go thru pages to do it.
Plus sizes are larger!
The rotten thing is the posting of name every time you post gets old real fast and once a post is up no way to delete it yourself and as Rob said don't forget name otherwise they will get get on you.
Overall they have some great builders on their from Europe and such overall not a bad place but not much in the way as user friendly unless you are in the group!!
So final thing is this place overall is a better!!
my 2 cents worth!!

Hmmm. Remember my "Stun Button" request Jim? Now, add "Jolt Button" to that list. I can then surf around the Site and "zap" any avatar I see out there appearing to be sleeping...

I started on ML but find it much friendlier here. But sometimes a post on ML will get an answer when the same post here gets no response. Just means we need to convert some of the ML'ers to here. :-)
I especially like being able to find the active posts here on Armorama.
The ML Gallery is nice but I think here we'd have to push the storage req back on the member whose picture it is.

I agree ptruhe... this place is MUCh friendlier!
However, ML is helpfull for me when I have a specific question on German armor... that is really the only reason I go over there. This site is a wonderful resource for me.... trucks, planes, modern armor, shermans... etc. There are resident experts in all those fields right here, so I don't have to go anywhere to ask my questions :-)
As far as German stuff goes... I pretty much have my ducks in a row.. so if I have to ask a question - It is usually VERY specific. Such as, "Did 9th SS have any PzKpfw IV H's on Sept. 19, 1944?" I asked that question in both places - but only got an answer on ML. (I got the complete 9th SS vehicle compliment on that date)....
Anyway - this site needs more German armor EXPERTS ...hehehe :-)

Ach! Zee Germans...
Seriously, I have been reading and thinking about the posts here. I'm going to begin encouraging more use of the Sub-Forums feature. It can become difficult to follow extremely long threads for members interested in specific things. I don't want to kill the spirit (fluff - for some ) altogether, but do think coralling all that good info into the Sub-Forums would enhance the experience. Lately, I've been getting lost in the mega-threads. No complaints, but I try and hit the whole site several times throughout the day, and it's a challenge to keep up.
However, this is only going to happen over time with Moderator effort guiding the membership. We're blessed with a really friendly and chatty atmosphere. There's kernels of gold in every thread - and we can probably do a better job of pulling them out instead of going to a drier threaded forum setup...

The one thing I'd like to see is a "Post to All" option attached to the reply button. I posted an IPMS definiton of OOB "TO" Gunnie and its meaning may have been initially miscontrued. There are times it would be nice to be able to add to a discussion without aiming the response to anyone in particular, just putting a comment out there.

Ooooh - do you envision the "Post to All" like the traditional sequential posting in a thread, with the "To" button option like a private PM? Or, like a "Talk to Talk" where the post generates a thread between the two parties?

I was having a brainfart when I posted that last post, since most replies are "To all" What I was sort of thinking #:-) was quoting and posting generally, which, of course, you can do by cutting and pasting. So in the words of the immortal Emily Letella, "Never mind!"
