Thank you for a great review Eric! The pointers on the variation in vehicle set ups is much appreciated. I am still curious about the LEGEND missile tubes and the "bump" on top. Any details on what that bump is about?

amoz, I found photos on Primeportal that were taken by Brent Sauer of an M1167. In the cargo area there are photos of a placard that shows how these missile tubes with the bump are loaded on both the top and bottom of the rack. It is a simple graphic on a sticker but the shape of the bump is unmistakable. I have never seen a photo of one of these tubes however.

Eric

From the Raytheon website.." Wireless TOW missiles include an RF transmitter added to the missile case and an RF receiver located inside the missile. Since no launcher modifications were required for the transition to wireless, this growth in capability is transparent to TOW customers."
Defense Update..."The wire guidance system is replaced by a radio command link. The new guidance system is immune to IR countermeasures which could be used by enemy tanks. Both upgrades can be performed on the TOW-2B missile and offer savings of 20-40% compared to new acquisitions. The US Army is testing the modified missile and has funded procurement of the wireless TOW 2B version through fiscal years 2007 - 2009."
MilitaryPeriscope.com..."Wireless TOW
This is a modified TOW 2 with a wireless command-guidance link. The guidance system is immune to infrared countermeasures. The Army has funded the procurement of the wireless TOW 2B through fiscal years 2007 to 2009. The missile can be fired from all standard TOW launchers because the wireless system is built into the missile and missile case. An RF transmitter is integrated into the missile case and an RF receiver is fitted into the aft end of the missile.
Production for the U.S. Army began in 2006."

amoz02t, thanks for the info about the missiles. Now the question is... does the Army carry a mix of missiles or just one type at a time? I guess it's safe to say the new missiles probably are depicted in the placard in an M1167 because they expect to carry only the new type, or maybe not? I hope one of our subject matter experts can help!

Eric

Seeing as TOW stands for Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided, shouldn’t “Wireless TOW” just be “TO”? :

I have never seen a photo of one of these tubes however.
Looks like there's one in the background in Peter's first pic above...

Peter- on the storage rack in the black acrylic material, I got a message from Shapeways...
"Unfortunately, we are unable to manufacture 1/35 SPM-35-027-TOW-07 TOW missile containers rack from order"
I will try the frosted extreme material instead. Thanks- Stuart

Stuart, I tried to apply the High Definition Acrylate Black material for printing (since this material is cheaper), but the HDA printing technology is not suitable for printing a model with closely spaced parts in the set (as inform me shapeways). Also I checked the quality of the HDA material and in my opinion this material is not clear enough for printing small detail. So I canceled the print option in the HDA material, and left the print options in the Frosted Detail materials.

Peter my order arrived. No problems and the rack for the TOW tubes looks great! I am now traveling with my work again, but will try to get some photos up of the parts. Thank you for such great offerings!
