I am starting my first German AFV build and am doing a Sk.Kfz.231.
All I have for weathering right now is Flory Dark Wash and Tamiya panel line black. I will buy other products but, I dont know what I should buy.
Any thoughts?

I would recommend watching a few Youtube videos. See which one appeals to you and go that route. You will likely be investing in pigment and more washes; which you can create yourself. At this point, you can choose which medium to use. Oils are very appealing, but have a sharper learning curve and require more patience.

There are lots of methods and products available. If you search on this site using keyword "weathering", you will get lots of ideas, some of which link to videos on YouTube.

It would be easier to suggest some specific colors and techniques if you describe your vehicles base colors (gray? Yellow? Winter whitewash?), conditions - dusty? Muddy? Desert? Winter? France? Italy? Etc.

Regards,

Mac

Well the box says France early war.
Which Vallejo model air color would be good for the base coat?
Thanks.

I got these that are from Vallejo

Painting
https://www.squadron.com/Vallejo-AFV-Painting-System-Dunkelgrau-German-p/vj78400.htm

and for weathering
https://www.amazon.com/Vallejo-Weathering-Yellow-Grey-Vehicles/dp/B00BATBLRG

The weathering set is getting harder and harder to find but it helped me with a place to start.

Cheers

Dale, sdkfz 231 - 8 rad or 6 rad?

Anyway, I suggest this is where you really do want to start off with a considerably lighter grey than the final colour would be in real life, which in photos appears almost black. If you can get some variation into the colour then it will stop it from being just very dark and flat looking, so you could even use two shades, blending one into the other, darkest grey on lower parts, lighter higher up or on top surfaces. Remember, in the later stages of weathering, dark grey vehicles really show up dust, so either pigments, or dust coloured enamel paints misted or washed on then blended with a brush will also help to lift it away from the darkness.

6 rad.
I am really just a beginner so I want to stick with some basic stuff and work my way up.
A wash and some kind of dust dry pigments would be good for me at this time.
Which dry pigment dust would be good for this?
Thanks.

Think it's just a matter of what environment does your AFV come from? North Africa setting? Eastern Front?

I'm trying to ask myself where my build came from...what battlefield did it just leave?

Brand wise, it's up to you. Check out your local shop or some online retailer.

Now I am confused again.
Dose anyone else use Vallejo Model Air paints?
They have two different names for the same paint.
Number 71.052. I have seen it labeled both German Grey and Anthracite Grey.
Are they in fact the same?

No, it will be fine. The colour in reality was very dark, and your pigment dust will show up nicely and provide a good contrast.
This picture is alleged to be a genuine colour photo and suggests the kind of look you might be trying for. Notice how dark it is where there's no dust at the top, around the turret hatch.

Thanks. I am still not sure which color pigment dust I should use though.

I think you need to think about place and time of year. In the summer in dry weather, dust in Northern Europe will be pretty light coloured no matter what the soil colour, it's not like parts of the world where you get reddish coloured dust. If damper then it will get darker, so there's a difference between dry and damp dust on a vehicle.

Personally I'd go for a pale brown to brown-yellow ochre type colour rather than darker browns, red-browns or greys.

Remember that the dust showed up a lot on the grey, so much so that they ended up completely abandoning dark grey and moving to dark yellow, which is much closer to the dry dust and dry dead plant color.

This is one I did that uses yellow ochre pigment by Vallejo (not everyone might like it I guess)

Thinking about it, you said France, so maybe a bit more brown than the two photos above which are further east, but if you want it to look dry and show up, go for a pale earth.

Well I bought some Ammo weathering products.
I got dark earth pigment, pigment fixer, and streaking for panzer grey.
I think that with the Flory wash will be a good star for me.
Once I get to the point of weathering I will try and post pics so you folks can give me some feedback.
Thanks for all the help.
