Personaly, I'd apply a coat of watered down PVA white glue or Johnson's Klear (Future) before painting.

I do this stuff professionally... and work on plaster constantly. Be aware that SOMETIMES you don't want to seal plaster - the pourous substance adds to the reality.... BUT... if you have completed your work, and now want to protect it, I like to go over mine with one or two light coats of ModelMaster Clear Flat / Matte finish from a spray can or airbrush. Tamiya Flat Spray (#1960) also works well... puts a nice protective layer on your work, without modifying or changing the look of anything... It also helps to "lock down" things like the debris, dust, and chalks you apply. Of course, if there are "shiny" areas such as water or glass windows you need to protect, then consider a spray misting of FUTURE ACRYLIC FLOOR WAX.... Best of all would be a nice enclosure, but that isn't always possible.

Hope this helps!
