I have 1/20 and 1/16 figures with closed fists and I'm wondering if I can get away with gluing on a rifle onto the top of the fist itself.
Would this look odd that the fingers are not spread apart to hold the trigger grip? Do I need to sculpt putty around the fist to make it larger somehow? I know most hands holding the trigger has the trigger finger extended over the guard, but I can't do that here.
If I can't get away with the optical illusion, I can always glue the rifle to the front or side of the body as if on a sling.
Thanks in advance.

Why not cut the rifle at the place you want the hand to go,remove a portion of the rifle as wide as the hand, then glue the front piece of the rifle on one side of the fist and the bottom piece on the other side ?
I have done this many times with other equipment.

I think cutting a rifle it would be almost impossible to get a straight rifle, I think it would look like someone cut the rifle and glued to each end of the fist.

I'm by no means a figure guru, but I'd agree with Chris. Especially in those larger scales you mention, I think it would look too obvious. Look closely at the difference in how a man's fingers clenched in a fist aren't as extended as when the fingers are wrapped around an object, like a rifle stock. You can see it on your own hand,, make a fist, and then grasp an item as large as a rifle and I think you'll see what I mean. What you might try is replacing the whole hand (if you have spares) from a fist to one more opened.

I agree guys, but considering he sounded like someone new to figures and all,he could handle something like this. Remember,he was talking about just gluing the rifle to the outside of the fist in his original post. It doesn't sound like he is at the place yet where he can sculpt a new hand, etc.

Anything held in a clenched fist would have to be very narrow, or skinny. A broomhandle might be the largest possible. You could try boring out the fist at each end a millimeter, or so, - between thumb and forefinger at one end, and between little finger and hand palm at the other. This will enable you to glue the cut ends of whatever into the fist to make it look like he's really holding something.
