Some of these 28mm kits are really nice but why couldn't they do this in 1/72?

They could, but they're being paid by Warlord Games to create these to expand Warlord's range of 28mm tanks for their Bolt Action game. Italeri is choosing to box them in their own boxes and sell them for other markets as well.

I see by the parts layout you can make one of 4 version , a French Char B , German version with split hatch , German flamethrower version with a Flamingo type flame gun , and the later version with the fuel tank at the rear . Might have to get a Warlord 3 kit box , just love their ( and Rubicon's ) 1/56 tank kits
