Hi all,
I'm curious about what British tankers wore and carried in the field in North Africa.
I've seen a lot of pictures with the black tanker beret. Any other noteworthy headgear?
Personal weapons? Did they carry tommy guns, or Enfields in addition to the Webley? Something they'd remove from the tank if they had to be dismounted?
Thanks,
Gaz

Standard uniforms of the period were worn with either the Black beret or in the case of some Cavalry originated units their own side caps and Officers peaked caps . Some regts had coloured flashes on epaulettes. Weaponry was the Webley and generally one Tommy gun per vehicle or more in the US sourced vehicles. Both normal and the low slung holster can be seen. The Low slung holsters were also seen with the drop down rolled around the belt to ensure it sat higher. There is a new Osprey title due out (or out) on the subject.

Jim Starkweather has a sample of it already, see the recent mail call video.

The Men Inside the Metal: The British AFV Crewman in WW2 Vol 1 has a very useful section on tankers in the desert.
