I am planning to build Revell's small-scale kit of the Merkava III. This is a relatively old kit, and consequently lacks any representation of the anti-slip surfaces. I wonder whether anyone knows exactly which surfaces would have been textured for this purpose, as I will need to apply a suitable material before embarking on the painting sequence. I assume the best treatment for this scale would be an ultra-fine sand (dust, in fact) over a layer of spray adhesive or spray varnish.

I would go with a textured paint like Rustolium's Terra cotta spray paint. The results are more consistent.

Honestly in 1:72 scale I think anything you use would be out of scale...Maybe a light stippling with Mr.Surfacer 1000?

I agree completely with this, sand and Rust-Oleum are fine in 1/35 but smaller scale like the 1/72 revell kit it would be really out of scale. As for where to apply it, nearly all horizontal surfaces would have the anti slip coating minus the smoke dischargers and main gun

Many thanks for the various responses to my question ... yes, I guess any type of granular coating would be noticeably out-of scale for this model. I will have to give it further thought.
