I could certainly be out of line on this one but . . . .
IMHO, it is a miracle that current day US military vehicle technicians learn ANYTHING from the TM manuals provided.
(OK, one correction - OSHKOSH Tech Manuals.)To start off with the TM's seem to almost never provide any kind of general overview image of the object about to be covered. Instead they repeat the SAME identical illustration image over and over and over again page after page. Then every section is divided/punctuated with an unbelievable number of blank wasted pages and almost every page or sub-section that carries any informative info repeats the SAME warning symbols and caution statements an untold number of times throughout the document.
Again, IMHO I say that all those many line drawings are more expensive and contain less information per square inch than would a few simple black and white photos. The only reason the line drawings could possibly be cheaper is because the author uses the same drawings again and again and again 500 times throughout the document.
As an example; I have come to absolutely hate the drawing they continuously use of the HEMTT driver's station. And I would have to ask how many times must I be told that the steering wheel has been deleted for clarity?
Many of the TM's provided in World War II were true illustrated teaching documents and again IMHO had it all over today's nearly useless technical publications coming from the BIG O.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
