I bought one of these but have zero experience with resin kits. Should I begin with a more basic resin conversion before attempting this one?

I just looked through mine- My opinion is that it isn't all that complicated. most of the resin is for vehicle equipment and what is part of the vehicle looks like direct replacements for the kit parts. Doesn't seem to be much (if any) cutting of the kit plastic to get anything to fit.

Dennis, there is a very popular blog by Maki where he starts to use the Black Dog set in a GMV build and he eventually scraps the Black Dog pieces. They have significant warpage and just don't seem to want to fit together. You may have a different experience, but I doubt it. I've heard this can be common with some of their sets.

Eric

My build is here: link
It is not just warping, but I had serious problems fitting the pieces into Tamiya Humvee, which the conversion was designed for. I really liked the look of the large stowage piece and tried my best to make it fit, but then decided it is just not going to work.

Maki is right. You have to cut a lot and saw to make it fit. I succeeded.

I don't know for this kit but about other kits from Blackdog, casting blocks are often difficult to remove and instructions not very clear.
