Out of curiosity does anyone have any photos of this beast in its element or of the interior? I have found a couple through internet searches but Im trying to develop a vignette that will make some sense
I'd suspect they were built for a certain task. The only ones I was around were there to repair rifles, so you can take it from there. I do remember a nice gun cradle to hold the rifle while working on it. Seems like there was a large peg board hold tools like screw drivers and such. Plus there might have been an air compressor. I had an M14 worked on once (the sights literally fell off it!), and had an M60 fixed one other time. On Arty ranges we never saw one (even shooting M109's). Most issues had to got strait to the garage. Even changing the barrel on an M107 didn't have the van within eye sight. Suspect they were for light repair work only. Still a neat piece of equipment.
Your build is very nice, I might also add here.

did your kit come with First CAV decals? If you didn't use them, and don't have a need for them; let me know.

Put one next to a tank, we had at least one in D Co. 1/3 ACR back in 1988 or so. We had M1A1’s back then. Tanks were in NATO three tone cammo, the rest of our vehicles were in a desert MERDC scheme.

Brian - Nice build, always love the MERDC paint.
As for the uses, I had one in towed artillery battery for maintenance. Each battery had 1 and BN maintenance had 2.
Rounds Complete!!
