I have a copy of 'Panzer Colours 3', which has (on p.51) a photo of an obsolete Pz.III converted for use as an ammo carrier. I am aware that the turret would have been removed, and a tarpaulin used to cover the turret ring. A further photo in 'Panzer Colours 1' (p.30) suggests that this was supported by a rigid circular frame. Two things that I am not sure about: when the vehicle was in use, was the frame simply hinged back to allow access? ... and does anyone have any idea as to the internal layout to facilitate storage of ammunition?

I would think that you would be able to further research that specific unit. At the least, it should further identify the rest of the vehicles in that unit, probably up to regimental level. Then you could infer what ammo would be most in use, and extrapolate from there.

I don't have the books you reference. But, I have seen several pics of converted Pz III's as Munitionsschlepper's resupplying Tiger I's. The vehicles had schurzen, so they would be later versions that were converted.

I've seen a couple of pics where the cover is held up with a tripod style prop rather than a single rod.

There are examples of both with and without schurzen, and I've seen the front, with "lid" open but the interior blocked with mounds of ammo crates so you could always do that I guess. The weird schurzen in the first link would certainly be eye-catching..

By the by, not that it's related...but if you like weird panzer IIIs/Stugs, there's a photo in one of the Concord books of what appears to be one-off conversion to an artillery observation vehicle .

Looked to me that the Hummel could carry quite a bot more Ammo.

Yep for sure but they weren't about until 1943.
