2018 Vignette #2
Two Waffen SS Figures - Normandy Bocage 1944.
They will be in M42 Smocks in Late Oakleaf (Spring)

This was going to be a one figure vignette. I was working up two to pick from and liked them both. Similar to my recent Luftwaffe Figure, starting w/ old Tamiya figures. The uppers are from the SS troops boxed with Horch - Flak38 I built in high school (they are 40 yrs old and I'm realizing I MIGHT be little bit of a hoarder)... They were in early smock but just have to change sleeves and add pockets.
I like the using the old figures, they have OK detail and swap parts readily. Best thing is I don't feel bad chopping them up. If I don't like it I toss it. I could not do that w/ a nice resin figure - I'd be pissed at my self for wrecking it.

And who say the Flu is bad ?
Look at all the modeling I'm getting done !

Just looked up when I posted this. It's my 13th year here - Yay !

I’m looking forward to seeing how they turn out, as I will be doing a Villers-Bocage Tiger I soon.

Finishing up build phase. Little bit more field gear and their done. Overworked my putty, got grainy. Gonna have to clean that up.

Your progress photos will help me quite a bit for my figure painting. I’ve been avoiding it for ages because my clothing camos always come out of scale and look terrible.

What were you referring to when you said it came out grainy?

Camo is hard.
Getting the "Blob Size" correct is the key. That's why I'm doing these - force my self to deal w/ it.

Look at the right arm of figure w/ helmet and the butt of the figure w/ hat. The spots are not just diff. color - raised bumps. If your using phone might be hard to see that small.
I like my mix very soft / wet (buttery) to start and shape it as it drys. Tiny parts of the putty dried as I over worked it and it leaves bumps
Its easy fix, just have to light hit it w/600 grit. But its PiA...

Good day - made alot of progress on the base...
Pink foam insulation, my special base mud mix and some shrub root trees.
NOT looking forward to adding leaf to all that tho.
And not sure how to paint it...

Really nice work on the base so far, and a nice choice of natural tree roots for your trees. You might want to tilt the second figure's head up a bit more - instead of looking ahead, he's looking at the first guy's feet.

Beautiful work there! The figures look outstanding and the tree looks so realistic. I'm looking forward to seeing how you do the foliage-hopefully I'll learn something as that is not my strong point.

I'm interested that these troops are armed with StG44/MP44s...i was under the impression that they were not used in Normandy and that the first production batches in 1944 were sent to the Eastern front? I may be wrong. Either way it's looking great!

The vegetation is harder than I thought, takes a lot more time than I planned too.

I'm going to put some equipment, ammo boxes, maybe helmet w/ hole, etc... on the ground - thats what the figure looking down sees.

The StG's are maybe / maybe not. Much conflicting info out there. What I got was there were probably a few, but not that common. But I might change this to a later time.

I'm thinking of doing Autumn Oakleaf (Spring Oakleaf - my original plan) as most the material I have for vegetation has a fall look to it.

Well Tom I think you've done an incredible job of it so far...I'd LOVE to be able to make earth and foliage that looks this realistic and natural!

Part of that was definitely having a stock of real plant materials to choose from. You cant beat real when you want it to look real.
