According to Tasca's kit decal sheet, it seems there are no numbers on the hull side of Henry III...But this doesn't necessarily mean it's true

That it the kit I have used. When one looks closely at a picture of Gardiner standing in front of Henry III you can faintly see USA 30 and the rest is not visible. The Tasca decal placement sheet i have mentions the placement of the letters and numbers but only mentions the above ones. The rest is in Japanese,i think, so I’m not sure what the are mentioning.
Thanks Dave
Took a picture of instructions but can’t figure how to post it

All tank registrations had a 30- prefix, so that part is right . . . The rest is there but obscured.

You'll have to:
A) Determine the date of the photo.
B) Determine who built the tank. The date, along with a production record for the plant, will establish a range of numbers that it could be.
C) Determine if there are records that either include some numbers in the range as being part of Gardiner's unit, being in Africa, etc.; or eliminate others as being in stateside training units, at APG for tests, or assigned to other units.

Without other or better pictures, an educated guess that is not necessarily right but can't be proven wrong is about the best you can do.

Your last point Kurt may be the way to go. Looked for online sources but no luck. So Imay just wait to be proved wrong.
Thanks
Dave
