It think this would require a much thicker armor. BTW Did anyone notice the "Hedgehog" armor tiles one some vehicles?

Don't think so. If I'm not totally wrong, the dedicated artillery peaces are comparably slow compared to modern MBTs (by all means). Which is absorbed by their profile of use: behind the main battle line... just what comes to my mind...

In Artillery, the Weapon is the sharp pointy thing (the round) spat out the end of the tube, everything else is delivery....
Tube Arty Doctrine often includes 3 rounds rapid fire capability, with a slower sustained fire role.
Most, but not all Arty pieces have direct fire sights & this is practised.
I have fired a 25pdr (77mm) in Direct fire mode at larkhill,

During the video did they say what the range was when firing direct at the tanks?

They said that the targets were at 800 m distance.
The whole exercise was about self-defense for SP-artillery.
If the enemy armour is greater distances the self-defense would be to move out of sight or call in other weapons systems. I don't know which distance the German artillery doctrine say is the outer limit for self defense ...
At much longer distances they would use indirect fire, possibly/hopefully with terminal guidance and punch through the tops of the tanks.

A 155 is a big round and anything it hits is going to feel it. May not kill it but it will know it was tagged.
