I havent posted any work pictures in some time. Needless to say, ive been busy completing some stash kits.

The kit- Meng D9R

Normally, these kits are around 80 USD. Every now and then, i watch ebay for good deals, but most times, if you find it on ebay, its from China, and well, i dont trust kits coming from China for reasons that most people might not trust either. In either instance, i found one on ebay, within the US, for 40 bucks, so i jumped on it right away.

I wanted to do as much as i could in the way of aftermarket parts, so i bought a metal track kit, and the voyager photo etch set. The photo etch set was for the slat armor, which i was going to do, but decided against it during the stage of creating the slat armor, and i am glad that i made the choice to go away from the slat armor.

I did want to get a realistic, weathered look, so the best way to do so would to be with the chipping method.

One thing, before i post pictures, as all tracked vehicles have, there is always for me, the issue with track tightness. There is either too much sag, or its too tight, so i cut out the tensioner piston, and replaced it with a brass tube. i did this so that i could expand or retract the two sections to get a proper amount of sag, or an amount that i was happy with.

overall, the kit is phenomenal quality. i really had little to no issues with the build. the cabin area, since it is not a perfect square, and has more than 4 sides, can create some issues with fit, if they arent squared off, but was not too difficult to make it work.

other than the crew compartment, really quite easy. tracks are the hardest, but they always are when they are individual links

Great job on the dozer!

But not trusting eBay purchases coming from China? Considering that these kits are all made in China, and the reputable Chinese eBay sellers have positive feedback ratings in the 1000s, what could they possible have to gain from not delivering what they sell? If they don’t do it corrrectly, someone else will take thier place. I’ve purchased hundreds of items from Chinese sellers and have never had a problem. Two I use regularly- Sunlightmodelstore has great prices, and dogdogcome has been around forever (27000+ feedback), always reliable.

Trumpeter, Hobbyboss, Takom, Dragon, Rye Field and Meng are all chinese companies. I've had no issues ordering models from China on eBay, just gotta watch the shipping charges. I've had issues ordering from stateside vendors but never China and as long as you check the ratings and they do a lot of business and use paypal you shouldn't have any more problems than using a vendor like HLJ or Scalehobbyist.

Great build btw.

when i say "problems", perhaps you may not be aware of a normal practice is on ebay, but i am sure you do.
it isnt that it is where the kits come from, shipping problems, or little things like that. i know where all these companies originate from. however, many, many, sellers listed in china (not necessarily just china, but a large amount) are selling reproduced items for profit. i dont want to run into the possibility of funding theives and/or the possibility of getting a low quality product because it was reproduced. I dont think i ever found a seller up to the point that i bought it, that didnt use a stock photo, and unless i see that it is an individual seller that is using their own photo, i tend to steer clear.

i use ebay to try to save money, if i possibly can, but when you see low prices coming from an asian country, it throws up a red flag, just as anything would being sold at a really low cost. i dont "discriminate" from ordering from an asian country (i use HLJ and lucky model all the time), but when i use ebay, i am more than careful when i order ANYTHING.

This is the sole reason that i try to stay away from sellers from china unless it is an actual hobby store based in Asia. this has nothing to do with getting the kits, but everything to do with stealing from the actual reputable companies.

I can understand not wanting to end up buying bootleg figures because it is a very real and crappy issues with the industry there, but an entire bootlegged injection molded kit? For the actual logistics needed to pull that off, this hypothetical bootlegger might as well start their own company if they were going to do that. (Ahem, like Trumpeter and Academy did.... )

Anyways, Ive never seen a bootlegged injection molded kit on eBay nor have ever even heard of it being a thing, so you're concern might be a bit unnecessary.

That said, love the weathering on it, especially the dirt and metal on the blade, looks amazing. Thanks for sharing it

I actually had one of trumpeters bootlegged tamiya T-72s. They didn't even bother hiding the tamiya logos on the sprues. It was bad copy of the kit molded in something that no western glue could work on. The instructions were photo copies of the tamiya ones with no effort to hide it, even leaving in the little cartoon character. This was before ebay and they stopped doing it. The big ebayers who have been in business a long time won't be selling knockoffs. If they are caught, ebay shuts them down but they will start a new account until they are caught again.

this is ultimately why i am very careful, and is really just easier to get them from someone that is selling directly from their stash, or from an actual hobby shop. i dont like to trust the stock photos that alot of ebay'ers use.

plus, usually dont have to wait for everything to go through customs or whatever

They give you two options for window glass. you can go with the bluish/green, or straight clear.

How long did it take you to build/paint the beast?

i have a tendency to put kits aside when i come up to a roadblock. in this instance, there were 2 roadblocks. one of which was the painting because of how complicated i figured it would be, and the other was the slat armor i wanted to do. i eventually just scrapped the slat armor, and then it was just about painting, so in all, it was over a year, but thats because of the months i didnt do anything with it. painting took 3-5 weeks or so, and this includes weathering. building probably took a couple months, and due to the PE and metal tracks, along with the hydrolic mod i had to do.,
