Scalemates claims it was first produced in 1987, new tool in 2007 and this kit is a new tool for 2018.

This a total new tool. The armored variant goes back 2011 on the new tool suspension but the DAK open topped is new for 2018 according to Scalemates.
Dragon Pzkpfw III go back to 1987 with the Gunze kits, but were totally redone in the 2000s. I doubt there's a single piece left from the original Gunze/Dragon kits from the 1980s-90s anymore.

WooHoo!!!
DS-tracks! My Favourite, or something
There is aftermarket though
In my opinion the feature with working suspension is just a lot of wasted styrene. I am building CyberHobby 6616 and the instructions doesn't mention that there is two diffeent torsion bars, one for the left side and one for the right side.
Guess how I found out ....
Easily solved by snipping the actual torsion bars and moving the outer ends to the correct side. The holes for the swing arms are also different in size so they must be on the correct side. Since mine will be standing on a flat surface, smooth as glass (since it is actually a glass shelf) I have no problem with "locking" the suspension.
Those who want to keep the suspension movable will need to watch out with the torsion bars. The first and last roadwheel on each side os locked in position by the shock absorbers anyway....

You know what's really scary? The Sherman Jumbo and M3 Lee are still in this new catalog.
I downloaded it and scrolled through and it's 2018 but those two pieces of vaporware are still listed there after all these years.

They release their announced new kits just as slow as I build them

For some reason, my Dragon update e-mails have failed to list anything new for over a month.

It certainly wasn't released by DML/Dragon in 87 as they had not hit the market as producers until 89.

The Gunze Pz III kit dates from later than 87. They did their Panthers about then, I think you have the 80's and 90's mixed up. The 80's were a drought for kits until Tamiya started the ball rolling about 87 with the new Tiger followed by Panthers. DML didn't start doing German subjects until about 90-91 and did modern Russian before that

That's impossible. Dragon didn't exist until 1989. Their 1st release was that 1/350 scale Typhoon SSBN. I don't think they even did any armor until 1990 or so. And that was BMP'1's and 2's, followed by T-72's and T-80's.

Reading comprehension people. The line of Pzkpfw III that would eventually come from Dragon started with the Gunze kits in 1987. Nowhere did I mean to imply that Dragon was around in 1987. Dragon's kits can trace their lineage to the Gunze kits of 1987. I know they were out at that time because I first saw them around the time I graduated college in May 1987 and before I joined the army in December. (Admittedly it Could have been a pre-release magazine ad)
But this is picking bits and in no way contributes to the point that Dragon still has the Jumbo and M3 Lee in their 2018 catalog or that this variant of the Pzkpfw III is all new. Just a misguided artempt to find error fault. And everybody jumps on, what is this MSNBC or something?
