I want to build a Panzer IV H with the engine deck hatches open be repaired , but I've noticed that the turret skirting covers them . How did they access the engine and radiator ? I know you can check the oil and rad coolant without opening the large hatches but what about other engine maintenance ? Did they remove the skirting or use a crane to pull the turret ?

If I recall correctly, the turret was rotated so that when the side doors in the turret armour were opened, the gap between the forward shield and the rear shield was enough to permit the engine access door to be opened.

Similarly, access to the Tiger engine was also only possible with the turret rotated.

Well , that looks rather awkward . Hmm , going to have to rethink my diorama as I wanted the turret pointed in a different direction . Thanks for information and pictures

I crewed on M60A1's and M1A1's and you had to traverse the turret to get all the grill doors open. The rear overhang is the problem on the newer tanks.
