I know it was an improvised and hurried attachment of extra armor to the standard Humvee during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and it was a stopgap until dedicated armored cars were manufactured. But I wondered if such vehicles were ever used in this country-say, instead of using regular armored vehicles when they were needed elsewhere.

Tom, the M1114 entered production in the mid 1990's and was in production for over 10 years. It wasn't a stopgap measure but a regular evolution of the HMMWV. It was slated to replace the legacy HMMWV Armament carriers. It too was replaced in production by the M1151. The M1114 were mostly replaced in theater by the M1151 when the IED threat made the HMMWV obsolete in Iraq and Afghanistan. HMMWV's are still used wherever there is little threat from IED's like Korea and Europe. I have seen photos of them in use by U.S. forces in Syria. The M1114 and M1151 were designed to carry the extra weight but the armor was still a lot for the chassis. The add-on armor kits that were used on the M1114 added thousands of pounds to the vehicle. I see convoys of USMC M1151's on the roads around here on a regular basis. The Army uses hundreds of them at Ft Irwin in training in standard and VISMOD configurations. The M1151 is still in production for U.S. and foreign customers.

Eric

Thanks for the info. So I can assume they served in the USA as well?
