Hi Roy,
As far as ootb, I would go with any of the Asuka kits. They require the least amount of messing with to get a nice model. However, the new Tamiya M4A3 76 HVSS is very nice (I don't have the Korean version yet). To me, there is no perfect shermans but these are a good start. My one big complaint for the newer Tamiya kits are still the overly thick light guards
Hope this helps
Jeff

Tasca's are very good, detailed.I built their firefly, really nice.
If you want something on the cheap and an excellent kit,the new Tamiya Easy 8 is very good, and if you have a Hobby Lobby,it could be had for about $30 with their % 40 coupon

I agree with what the previous guys have said...Tasca/Asuka (same company) and Tamiya are both good. As a point of intetest, i believe the Tamiya Firefly Vc is actually a Tasca reboxing.
The Tamiya A4E8 is very nice-great casting detail and even some moulded-on battle damage and the model comes with a very nice commander figure!

Dragon- good build, crisp detail.Beautiful Slide-molded gun barrel w/hollow muzzle -rifled detail. PE parts. DS tracks with good detail & ordinary model glue works on them. Some kits come with separate track links.- firefly kit. Pricey but worth it.Good decals.Several kits to choose from. Some kits come with figures.Usally come with 2 sets of wheels & extra parts.
tasca- very good but transmission maybe confusing to some-misalignment , multi piece lower chassis. Rubber tracks that come in 4 pieces...cloth to represent rubber cushion on bogies. 2 piece barrels is a negative.PE pieces.Over priced.Very good decals.Several kits to choose from..these kits "seem right or feel right" when completed.
italeri- nice easy build, rubber tracks are yuck. Good cheap build. Single barrel. No PE.OK decals.Gross figures.
tamiya- easy but over priced for old kit. rubber tracks...no PE.OK but left unsatisfied but good for quick build.Good decals..well engineered kits.New firefly kit is a reboxed tasca kit. Their new tooled kit is good.I like some of their figures. Tamiya kits have crews or figures.
revel- about same as italeri
academy- nice build, nice detail, single barrel , good decals, easy build..a good selection of sherman variants.Usually come with 2 sets of wheels. Very cheap price..satisfying build. Some kits come with figures. Rubber tracks about same as tamiya's.Academy is underrated...some rivet counters dislike them.
Takom- M3 Lee & grant...ok. Good detail, PE. Separate track links - questionable. I like these kits.
Eduard- is a reboxed tasca kit with eduard PE- good kit. I bought it twice.
my $0.02
I find it interesting you mention the Asuka Transmission yet neglect to mention the horrendous fit problem of the transmissions on just about every DML Sherman. Every Asuka/Tasca one I have done has never presented a Misalignment problem however if you don't know Shermans there is the possibility you may put the bolt strip in. The Majority (Almost all except the earliest and Italeri sourced Shermans from DML have horrible fit of the transmissions.

The Revell and Heller 1/35 scale Sherman kits ARE the Italeri kits in different boxes. The new Italeri "Fury" is the best of all Italeri Sherman kits with a new turret and suspension and soft vinyl track as opposed to the typical Italeri stiffies.
Not only is the hull front and final drive fit on many Dragon Sherman kits awful, but the location of the final drive mount on the hull is wrong in some of their kits. I recommend checking the Perth Military Modeling site on a kit for kit basis on the Dragon Shermies in regards to the nose and final drives.
The Academy VVSS suspension Sherman have HVSS idler mounts so they're off and don't fit right. Their T34 Callipoe is superior to the Italeri just because it's basis is the Academy M4A3 as opposed to the Italeri even though the rocket launcher parts are identical. Academy also gives you the alternate launcher mount.
I love the Academy HVSS suspension kit.
My 2 cents for whatever it's worth.
Get the Hobby lobby coupon and treat yourself to the Tamiya M4A3E8 ETO. Shake the box and it builds itself. Get some wire to add the handles and enjoy the build.

Holy dayum , are you "triggered"??? HAHA You must be a Dragon hater? "Horrendous"? Really? I never have a problem with Dragon kits & I built "alot" of them..I built every single Dragon Sherman on the market (not the old DML brand- I am not talking about the ancient DML kits- I'm talking the newer kits)....You have a right to your opinion..as do I....I knew someone would get "triggered". Oh well. Seriously..Tasca's 2 piece barrel compared to Dragon's beautiful slide molded barrels...horrendous.
Hardly a DML hater although over theyears they have given me plenty of reason with personal attacks and the most horrendous correspondence re reviews of some of their Shermans despite having some input with them to help correct errors. Some DML Shermans (M4 NWE, M4 1c Welded Composite, M4105 and the 1 C Composite are good kits but most of the DML SHermans have really bad fit of the Transmission which has spawned Websites to correct (Apparently i am not the only person to note this). Almost all since their M4A2 kit was released have problematical instructions and even later ones can be found with stupid errors like grouser covers on M4A3 hulls, the Firefly VC has now had four distinct editions suppossedly correcting the errors of the original release but each new edition added it's own set of errors. Asuka/Tasca shermans are not without errors but they are so minor that they hardly rate a mention and the buildability is first class compared to a DML one with Instructions that a Sherman Novice wouldn't struggle with like hte DML M4 COmposite which gives you a HB and low bustle turret but only one turret lower which is not the same for both versions, that is before you consider the LB turret they offer was never used on Composites. It also would have you fit the British fittings such as Aerials etc in the instructions.
They aren't bad kits but despite one piece barrels hardly in the same league as Tascaa/Asuka. I feel you would be in the minority of SHerman Modellers to rete DML over Asuka?Tasca

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve never considered a two-piece gun barrel ‘horrendous’ per se compared to a one-piece one. All large calibre (anything above 40mm or so) barrels used to be moulded in two halves and they generally fitted together pretty well even if sometimes we removed the locating pins and sanded the mating surfaces to improve the fit. I think we called it part of ‘modelling’.
For me at least, I’d always prefer a dimensionally accurate two-piece one over an inaccurate one with no seam but your preference may differ.

Why, are Dragon barrels "horrendously" dimensionally inaccurate? One thing I never liked about Tasca(cast) Shermans was that the surface is smooth...like, really smooth. You could ice-skate on them! And those silly little pieces of rubber you had to cut out and place in the suspension units, like Tasca had made a mistake somewhere and forgotten something, and that was their idea of fixing it. Oh well...I guess that's all just a part of modeling!

I have no first hand experience of measuring Dragon’s barrels but I think Kurt published a comparison a few years ago which used actual dims. My point was a general one, not specifically about Dragon’s, Tasca’s or anyone else’s kit parts.
I have examined a few Shermans though and the welded plates were pretty smooth. Certainly smooth enough that I wouldn’t be texturing them with power tools or solvents anyway. The castings were fairly smooth too.

The new Tamiya easy 8 kits have a mix of Tamiya and Asuka - mostly the later, and in my opinion are quite solid. You will still need to add some details but it is a cheap kit if you grab one at hobby lobby with the coupon it's 30.00.
The later DML Sherman kits are much better than the earlier kits.
