I am going to be using these on my panther a and I have never used them before...Anyone ever use them? Any problems with them? Things to watch out for...I have read somewhere that the decal can lift on the edges and you need to use CA along the edges. The guy who said this applied them over a coat of Tamiya Red Oxide Surface primer...Should I apply the decals to bare plastic? Over a gloss coat?

Hi Michael.
I’m in the (boring) process of applying them on my panther. I have tried them on spare pieces both with and without primer, and for the record it was red oxide primer from mig. They don’t stick on any of them like normal decals. I had to use warm water to separate it from its support and, once dried on a piece of cloth, I glued them using humbrol liquid poly. After a few parts I closed the box for it was time consuming. I haven’t checked for a couple of weeks but last time, the parts that already had the zimmerit on, still resisted.
Hope this helps

Iv gotten about half way through the sheet and I am not impressed to be honest. I did a little experimenting and Ive found that a solution of water and wood glue works well for keeping the decal down. Id apply the water/wood glue mix to the back of the decal and then place it on the tank. Tamiya extra thin cement works well for snugging down those stubborn edges.
Even with the water/glue mix and the tamiya glude Id still have edges creep back up. Some of the decals seemed over-sized and required slight trimming. Which is ok, easier to remove material rather than add it back.
The detail/relief of the pattern on the decal is very soft. I feel like primer would diminish the detail. It does seem to hold up to weathering on a small test piece I did.
Im probably going to be removing the decals and going with the A-Tak stuff now that they have a pattern out.
These are just my experiences with the product, not to be taken as an absolute. Someone more skilled than myself might offer better insight into some tricks on making the zimmerit decals shine.

G'day Michael
For my money, and I have used one set of them, they're more trouble than they're worth. The patterns are way too fine, and getting the decals to stick and remain so is better achieved with lots of liquid poly. Having given up on that model, I'm now sticking Atak zimmerit on another Panther A with two pack epoxy and it's working like a dream.
Regards
Rob

Andy is using the decals in his Ausf. A build video. Skip forward to the 14:16 mark in the linked video for his impression.

thanks for the responses guys...I am wondering if Tamiya decal adhesive would make them stick...of course I can only find the stuff overseas and would probably take a month to get here so I don't think I am going to go with that...I think it's time to crack open a new box and put the meng on the shelf until I find a solution...probably going to go with the atak set...we'll see

I was just thinking today that I could, before placing the decal, perhaps brush on a mixture of soda and dish soap on to the area I will be applying the decal...soda at its core is water so I will be able to move the decal around and the dish soap would break the surface tension so I wouldn't have the soda beading up when applied giving me a a uniform coating of this mix when brushed on the model and the fact that soda is full of sugar and gets sticky as it dries and maybe that would hold the decal on and once it dries seal it with a coat of varnish...any excess mixture that gets on surfaces I don't want it to can be wiped off with a wet paper towel...I think I am going to try that and see what happens...if it's not sticky enough I suppose I could add sugar to the mix...hmmm

Check out this link which reviews them. Not so positive.

I used them and thought they came out great, applied them like decals then when dry a little Tamiya extra thin snuggled them down fine, a little sanding of the edges and done easy and i think looks good. I will try again to post pics but havent had any luck with that.

Methinks this not a good idea makes.

My concern is what might happen to the sugar over time. It's organic, and will decompose eventually.
