I have been working on this for the Scratch Build campaign. The base kit is the Hobby Boss TAS-44M but I have turned it in to an upgraded version from 1950s (its going to be marked up as a Hungarian revolutionary vehicle - STAR decals). Resigned turret to fit the T-55 barrel. Lowered the upper hull so it starts to look a bit "sleeker".

turret is now complete (if I go further I risk overcrowding and not having room for some nice numbers and the texturing) - have reworked the mantlet a little to try to make it look more "moveable". External fuel tanks done and the mounting points fitted - they too will be textured (may be tomorrow). Fender brackets on so its time to look at where tools/storage can go. Have some spares for boxes but some will be scratchbuilt (oh and I guess at some point I need to look at the tracks!!!!!)

new found tool of choice - Mr Surfacer 500!!! Turret & Fuel tanks "cast" (nice to see them looking "unified"). Storage started. Going to take a break and tackle the tracks - well at least remove from sprue. 189 of the things!!!!

more small additions. Light on the front (not really happy with the "wiring") and a turret air ventilation system (made from a Crusader exhaust system I believe) - hey its a WHIF.



toying with the idea of rear fuel drums (typical soviet design) but not sure if I am getting too close to a straight copy of the T-54/55) - its just calling out for "something"

thanks - that may be a good idea. I am hoping with the altered wheel alignment I may still have some spare track - in which case that will be mounted in racks on the rear and then also on the front of the right fender. If not, then the fuel tank may be an option (suggestion was like the Aussies did with the Chieftan - a huge rectangular brick of a tank rather than a sleek barrel)

thanks for that.... i have the star decal set for the 1956 uprising - so will be a 3-number designation, the "shield" markings and a white stripe running down the center of the hull and over the turret. I was tempted to do a patriotic slogan as the soviets were prone to do - not sure if this was done.... something simple like "Freedom"...

Nice idea but I don't think the gun would fit in that turret, the chassis wouldn't be able to handle the extra weight and I looks like you're using the Esci t-55 barrel. I love these "what if" tanks but they should be somewhat realistic. Having said that I do respect your friends and effort....

the barrel was an ebay purchase - just bought the barrel as I wanted to upgrade mine... fair comment on the chassis - its the 1 part I wish I had looked to upgrade

on the turret, the size is roughly that of the T-55 (from plans) so should fit...

anyway this is more of a test bed for my scratch building but thank you for the response

Well, if it's a Hungarian tank, it should have Hungarian slogens, right? There were a couple of tanks painted with Hungarian markings (mostly the old-style coat-of-arms of the country), and there were some slogens you could use

ok, if i can get it to look good it will be done...

on to the tracks. going to do both sides to over the front & rear wheels first then see if there is enough to fill in the top on both sides. if not, i will do skirts (think I could do something rusty and unfinished if I did so may do it anyway)

managed to get the tracks done (still my do skirts - at least mock them up to see what they look like) and spare tracks on the fender and on the rear. I need to add extra storage to the other side of the rear. Next attention is the glacis. The light is on but not overly happy, and I dont want to leave the front so "boring" (or simply add tracks) so need to have a look - one option is a patriotic slogan (have the words "Russkik Haza" or something like that to handwrite on the front)..



hope by this time next week there will be primer on it (going to do B&W shading again)

i think the build is done... going to leave off the storage on the rear plate. Only thing I cant decide is on the skirt - anyone ? keep or leave off (of course if I do add then 1 or 2 will be missing, there will be damage - and does open up options for sheet metal so heavily rusted (perhaps I will paint them up then decide - and of course the patriotic slogan could be on them!!!)

Your skills really shine, on this one. As far as the skirts go, you could have a few panels missing. I always liked that look, on schurzen. I'm a little late in asking, but how did you apply Surfacer? I can never achieve a very good cast effect, with it.

thanks Matthew. I was tempted by a couple missing as well...

for Mr Surfacer - I used a stiff old brush and stippled it on. There are still some areas that are a bit "smooth" so I may add another layer in parts to try to increase the effect (I am really hoping that having a rough texture will shine through when I apply the big white numbers on the turrets (and colourful Hungarian shield)

a variation on the LOPEZ method... black with white addition (rather than white with black).... next it will be chipping, oil stains (going to do this before the base green).... ok so its not neat but the variation "SHOULD" be visible...
