Im about to take my first shot at using a liquid mask for my canopy, should I use my Tamiya masking tape for the edges and then put the liquid latex in the middle? Or is the liquid latex all you need? Also I was reading to apply the liquid mask fairly thick and remove immediatley after the paint is dry is this a good process? Thanks!

Hi Redman. I’ve been watching this thread to see if someone more knowledgeable would answer, because I’ve only had negative experiences with this method. But, let me put my 2cents in anyway.

Whenever I’ve used this method, it seems the tape or the Liquid mask would pull up too much paint, and I would get uneven, “chipped”, or completely bare canopy lines. This happened three out of the four times I used the method. Now, I just use Liquid mask, and a small tipped brush, and “paint-in” the glass parts of canopies. I’m not 100% satisfied with this method either, but it works better than in combination with tape (for me, anyway).

As for when to remove the liquid mask, I leave mine on until completely done. I make sure my canopy is dipped a couple of times in Future, and allowed to completely dry before I apply the liquid mask. Then, I attach the canopy, and paint. After it’s dry, I spray gloss coat, decal, and hit it with another coat of gloss. Weathering next, and then a layer of dull coat. Then, I remove the liquid mask from the canopy. This way, there is no chance of you “fogging” your clear parts accidentally when applying gloss and dull coats.

Take this for what it is worth, I am not the best “wingy-thing” builder on this site, and I am still learning myself. But, I just thought I would share my experience with you. Good luck, and welcome to the site.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi. Take a look at this post I made a while back.
I too painted in the liquid mask with a fine brush and was fairly happy with it. I had actually sprayed the vhicle base colours and had interior painted before the windows were attached. I masked to spray lighter base colours, filters and final dusting. I would definately use this product again.
One thing is for sure, paint it on thick ...... it comes of easier where its thickest and thinner areas may break needing more effort to remove ... that in turn, could cause damage by scraping. If you do make a little mistake ... it can be pushed away easily enough when drying. I found absolutely no lifting of paint when removing.
I have never masked when spraying .... I use blue tack (silly putty ?? or the stuff teachers use to hang pictures on the wall, that can be removed easily). then again i build armor, so this is what works for me!
Good luck.
