Hey all,
I'm sure this might be out here somewhere already, but I haven't found this forum to be the easiest to search.
I'm wondering if anybody knows where I can get stencil decals or dry transfers for 1/35 WW2 fuel drums. Thanks.

Never seen any, even though there are a lot for ammo crates. Archer would have been my suggestion, but they don't have them.

G'day Dan

You'll probably find that the reason you can't find decals is that fuel drums had the contents embossed in the steel at the ends. Certainly applies to German ones, not so sure about Allied.

Thanks Rob,
I know that the Allied (or US at any rate) did stencil their drums...I've seen photos of them. I know of the German technique...brilliant really.

A market needs filling...what company will step forth to claim this man's money? This seems like it should be a thing, no? Plenty of people making 1/35 propaganda posters but no Allied drum stencils. Priorities, right?

I know Archer makes lettering. It will be tedious AF and they may not have the correct size, but that is one option.

Yes I'm a bit surprised to find that nobody seems to be making them. Were my research better and my abilities stronger I might consider taking that up. Seems an unexploited niche for sure.

As for piecing some together as you suggested, I think I would prefer to just use some errant stencil decals from an aircraft kit or something. They aren't legible anyway so it's more a matter of representation.
Some of the drums I saw had larger stencils on one end that are large enough to be legible in 1/35 scale. Of I could post photos I would show you what I mean.

These look quite plausible :

They were apparently also stenciled on the sides instead of the ends, with the placement being inconsistent:

The first picture is also good to see the range of colors (including weathering) for the 'single' color of olive drab.

Yes I thought the same about both matters. I'm really not the rivet-counting type but drum stenciling seems a bit obvious to me.

I think that as long as there is something in the way of a detailing effort that looks representative of the small stencils I'll be happy. Thanks everyone for the input.

You're in luck. Almost all HO scale locomotive lettering sets (in white of course) have the words "generator" and "fuel" included several times. I just looked at a random set which had "CAPY" as well. Seems like it'll work. I'd search for white tank car data also. It probably has everything you need.

The set below is a generic set that does not include those words but it is a great one for all needs:

Use the magnifying glass feature to see a really good close up of the sheet.

Nice! Ya those could work for sure. It's something I am going to have to play around with.
