I haven't been able to get Tamiya panel wash in the UK
Any recommendations for an alternative

I use AK Interactive washes. Works great when used over a coat of Future.

are the same as any other enamel wash, just find the color that interests you then if it is AK, Tamiya, Ammo or other brands changes little, or as retiredyank says you can do them with oils or enamel and thinner

Oil paint plus thinner... Endless colors and you can make a gallon for what 1/2 oz of branded premix stuff cost.

I didn't think much of the tamiya wash when they came out but it seems they added some flow agent to it to improve flow. For water-based paint detergent would do the job but not sure what enamel would use for this purpose.
