Hello all,
I am looking a little bit into the M26. What is the difference between the M26 and the M26A1? At least Wikipedia does not mention these variants.
Thanks,
Thomas

IIRC, the 90mm M3 gun of the M26 was replaced on the M26A1 by the M3A1 which was fitted with a more efficient bore evacuator and single-baffle muzzle brake.

The change in designation was solely the result of fitting the M3A1 gun and M67A1 combination gun mount. The other detail differences were either modifications or production improvements. All M26A1s (as well as all M46 and M46A1 tanks) were modified from T26E3s or M26 tanks.

All M26 and M26A1 were up graded with the the continental 1790 V12 with a cross drive transmission which resulted in the change in designantion to M46 Patton

All M26 and M26A1 were up graded . . . to M46 Patton
That's not correct because there are a number of surviving M26 and M26A1s.

The M26 series eventually switched over to using T80 series tracks that were similar to those used on Shermans, but again, this had nothing to do with the M26 to M26A1 designation change.

Didn't these tracks use a "prong" guide horn instead of the "square block" guide on Sherman tracks?

Yes, that's what I was alluding to with the "T80 series" and "similar to" wording.

Ah, the old grey cells aren't as bad as I thought! Good to know I can still remember...
(Actually had a set of Shermie tracks set aside to upgrade a Dragon M46 back before I knew of such details.)
